Greetings fellow firearms enthusiasts. I received the above titled short action rifle and I am in need of peoples opinions on how best to accessorize said rifle. ie rail/scope , Muzzle break or no mb etc etc but would like to know what people have used, what worked for them. The main purpose is going to be target up to 250 and up budget isnt huge but would say its mid range. How did you customize your rifle of choice? Any and all opinions are appreciated.

on my 5r, as its my beater bash around rifle, im running an EGW 20MOA base, and a millet 5-15x50 scope . it does the trick for a sub 1800 rifle, they are great out of the box rifles, with good ammo (even better with hand loads) they are capable of 1/2MOA.

for rail options
EGW, near, NF, farrel, are all good choice and i beleaive ATRS makes rails too

scope - buy the best you can! you will thank yourself later! a good clear, repeatable adjustment scope is priceless, keep in mind, clear glass is 10X better then big magnification!!! i have scopes ranging from bushnell to top of the line - schmidt and benders. and hands down my S&Bs on the lowest magnifaction out do ANY of my other optics on any magnification setting

I have done a tonne to my 5R, both cosmetically and accurizing.

Besides the paint job

I put on a Farrel 20MOA Base
I had the action bedded
Replaced the trigger with a Timney at 1.5lb
I added lead weight to the buttstock
Added a defensive edge muzzle brake to control muzzle hop (recoil was already really light with the weight)
Added a accushot monopod and atlas bipod for prone shooting
Added a larger bolt knob to make it easier to work it and add a little torque
Added an extented internal mag box to fit a few more rounds

Nice shooting Ceriksson but my 5r does it too:D

I believe all 5R are capable of that when the shooter does its part......;). They are amazing rifles out of the box...and like Ceriksson showed....this are not 3shots groups.... Who are easier to be tight....

I run badger Ordnance base, EGW rings and a Sightron SIII 8x32x56 LRMOA scope....
Trigger set to around 1.5lbs. and that's all..... I was thinking of a bedding but the groups are so good that I was advise to not even do it for now.... So the only thing I did was the trigger...

I went crazy customizing mine. :p

Leupold bases and rings. Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm Rapid Z 1000 reticle. The rifle has had the trigger lowered but that wasn't really needed. Everything else is stock.

100 yards. 5 rounds 168 Federal Gold. Front and back bags. Shot on two different days. First two groups I've ever shot out of my 5R. Little to no wind.

Agreed. I never said that my rifle actually needed any of those customizations :). All for fun of the hobby and it definitely can't hurt.

i was getting good groupings on my 5r but i just can't leave well enough alone...i'm back to shooting precision this year and will be trying out the latest iteration tomorrow, we'll see if groups remained status quo/improved or if i totally F%*#d it up.

Some very nice rigs here guys, and awesome shooting as well.
5R is in my opinion the best value out there. I have had 2 and were both awesome shooters (.223 & .308). Now I see some 300 WM making there way up here...nice.

I love this one too, was this a stock model 700 that was modified, and where did you have it done. I would want the same magazine configuration. Does anyone know if we have any gunsmiths in Winnipeg capable of this kind of percision work, now to find out how much would this set me back. What is done to the rifle when you get it bedded and what is the benefit.
The black rifle, is it a 338 lapua?

The description above the pictures are the parts you need. All done by me. The A5 stock was ordered directly from McMillan. When I got it, I bedded it with Devcon steel epoxy (10110 if I remember correctly) I've bedded several and it isn't that hard once you figure out how to do it properly. The rifle is a stock Remington 700 5R Milspec in .308. I also have the. .223 model in another McMillan A5 as well. The 5R in .300WM is on its way to me and its McMillan A5 is hopefully on its way from Juanvaldez shortly too. I take off the HS Precision and sell in the EE as its an economical upgrade from the standard Hogues and such. The DBM is a HS Precision one. Although you can order the stock in whatever flavour of DBM inlet you want. Most go with an AICS compatible DBM as they are readily available and significantly cheaper than the HS mags. Only advantage is that the HS DBM is basically a drop-in to the Remington BDL inlet in factory HS stocks.

Bedding the rifle usually improves accuracy. Bedding in simple terms is setting the action up in epoxy or glass (with a release agent on the action itself when doing the bedding to allow removal and reinstall- you don't want it stuck to the stock permanently) and eliminates imperfections in the action inletting of the stock that may impose stresses on the action.

The rifle in the back is the Savage 110 FCP HS Precision in .338 Lapua. I've since sold it, but very much miss it!
