Hi All

I was wondering what parts of the Remington model 742 are caliber specific? Obviously the barrel, bolt(I guess same bolt good for a few calibers), but what else if any?

Really very little. They used the same receiver for both the long and short action. The trigger groups are the same, as are the stocks and the pump components. That’s pretty much most of the parts. Like you say, different barrel and bolt, and of course magazines. (Actually even the mags are the same length, just a different follower and a blocker/filler in the short actions). I actually wound up painting the bottom of my mags so I didn’t confuse the 308 and 270 mags.

Was the 742 chambered in anything that didn't use a 30-06 case head? Maybe 30 reminginton or 35 remington would have a different bolt if they were chambered in the 742, but everything I can think off is 06 base size. For example if your 308 bolt headspaced properly on your 243, 270 or 06 I'd use it. Other than that the gun uses the same parts as KePet has mentioned.

Hello All,

I'm pretty new to the CGN and I was looking through a few threads and this one seemed relevant.

I need a new forestock for a Remington model 742 and I live in the Ottawa. Wondering if anybody might know where I can get one?

Thanks in advance.
