Remington model 78

I tried the search function,nothing came up.
Who has one?What are they like?The one I picked up is a 270.Very good bluing and no marks on the stock.Value?

They are a plain jane Model 700 in a birch stock. I've had them in 243 and 30-06.

They were intro'd the same year the 788 was dropped...1984 IIRC. Remington figured out it was cheaper to pull 700 parts off the line before all the polishing and just give them a quick dip in the blueing tank and stuff them in a blind mag birch stock, than it was to build the 788 to meet that price point.

Had one in .30/06, not a thing wrong with it. Picture a 700 ADL with a hardwood stock and less polish on the metal. Mine shot real good with 165 grain PSP corlokts. Value? Probably $350ish or a little more in my area. You can always peel off the plain jane stock and buy an aftermarket synthetic.

The SPS is essentially the current equivalent of the 78.

I had one in .243. It was a good gun, wish I still had it. I only paid 400 for it brand new, around 1990.

I bought one in 1989 for $375 in .223 and converted to a .223 AI. Wish I had bought more. Just slightly less polish than an ADL and every bit as good as any Rem 700.
