Does anyone have any experience with the Remington Model 798 Mauser, imported from Serbia and stocked by Remington? I am considering one of these, or possibly hunting down a nice FN Browning Safari model.

They are the same rifles built by Zastava and marketed under the name Interarms MKX about ten years ago. I had one in .270 and to this day is the rifle I compare others accuracy to. It was rough, just like and 98 Mauser. But it shot where you wanted it to, and did it time after time.

I have one in 7mm rem mag. Bushnell 3200 3-9X40 on top. Very accurate and the stock fits me nicely. The blueing is very dark and the laminated stock looks better then a synthetic :nest:. The bolt channel guides inside the receiver had to be polished a bit to take out the roughness when I first bought it but it's smooth now. . I like it well enough that I'm thinking seriously about buying another. cheers

798

I bought one a year ago, very accurate 1/2 groups at 100 yards no problem with it, action was a little rough but in time that worked it self in.
Very accurate and reliable, and fits me good.
Would I buy another....yes!

I followed the link posted by supercub and read the two pages. Maybe I'm getting old but I was disapointed that the biggest naysayers were people who had never even shot the rifle but reported on them as if it was first hand knowledge. We can't turn the clock back and we are not all rich. The 798 - warts and all - (but no plastic) is a good buy for a solid rifle. :)

Thanks for that Bill - haven't heard much of any real world impressions of these.

I had a mark ten years ago. It shot 1" no problem. Why didn't remington go with a nice straight comb rounded forend to match the classic mauser action. The stocks are butt ugly in my opinion. Craig boddington tried these out in africa and had the same to say about the ugly stock.

i just bought one in 7mm remmag i haven't fired it yet but i put together some handloads useing 67.5g rl22 and a 140g ballistic tip. i bought it because me and my remington 700sps in 300winmag don't get along well together. that being said i do own a interarms mark X in 308win, this rifle is almost identical in weight, feel and pointability to my remington and we have killed a lot of deer together. the trigger is my only issue with these rifles, they have a lot of creep. but that is something you can get used to. perhaps my problems with the remmington is that it has such a beautifull trigger and when your making that decision to shoot in the field it is a little quicker than i am. on the bench the remingto 700 shoots very well for me, with one inch at 100yds and 3.1/4 inches at 300yds. the mark X will do less than one inch at 100yds and about three inches at 300yds. i have always loved mausers in there sporting guise and currently own a brno 602/375h&h, brno 601/22-250 sporterized brazilian mauser in 30-06, interarms mark X in 308win, and a laminated rem 798 in 7mm remmag. i think i have the field covered, dont you? so as you can see i would highly recomend the 798 as i think it is a much better rifle than their 700 line without question.
