Remington Model of 1917, What am I missing on the rear sight?

Just purchased a few rifles. This one was sporterized but it caught my eye since it was of a type used in WWI and made in 1918. I wish it was still in full military dress. My question is what is missing on the rear sight? Was it some sort of vernier peep sight and what would I call it to try and find a replacement online? The rifle does have a rear leaf sight should I just be satisfied with that? I'm guessing that drilling and tapping would just be adding insult to injury on this poor rifle.
Thanks

you could find the dovetail and peep for that base (to me it looks like a Williams base maybe?) one of the "older" guys on here will know for sure I have two rifles with something similar.

I'm guessing it's an old Williams steel base ( I'm not sure of the exact model number) that's attached to the side of the receiver. It's missing the upright which adjusts for elevation and windage. If you can't find the parts, try and find a complete sight.

No chance of military config on that one. Ear's are ground off and barrel's been shortened.

I realize there is no way to restore this rifle to its full military glory, I was just hoping to restore what I thought might have been an accurate sight. I thought this might have been a military sight.

Nicely done sporter.

I have several sights like that around on various guns. Redfield made them too.

You could take that base off and bring it to a well-stocked gun shop or parts guy at a gun show and they could find the slider/elevator thingie for you or provide you with an intact unit. The reciever sights are more accurate but that is a very good ramp sight you have there too.

You have a Lyman 48 base currently on you Enfield. This was the very best money could buy....it's missing the arm (windage/elevation). Can find on eBay. Not inexpensive by ant means however if using for hunting or a little target practice it's what you need. Far better than a scope. Nice rig. Ron

Ok, I just looked up the Lyman 48, I want one! If I have the base what do I look for to complete the sight? Would I just look for the"upper"aperture? Or would it be easier to try and find the entire sight?

Check ebay for a complete sight. The holes will match the base you have. Search for Lyman 48. maybe just an arm will show up.

Wow, I've never been on ebay before, I've always avoided the site. Amazing the stuff they have on there. I'll keep my eyes open for the Lyman 48. I'm going to check with Williams just to verify if this could be one of their bases.
Do these aperture sights use the front post that is currently on the rifle?

Yes.

Thanks Ron for leading me in the right direction, Lyman 48rs with the short slide. Let the hunt begin.

I posted this in the Optics forum but figured I might as well pose this question over here in case it is a a different crowd that frequents this forum. Hope I'm not breaking any rules.
Thanks,
Paul
"I recently picked up a Remington 1917, unfortunately it has been sporterized but it was done tastefully. At one time it had a Lyman 48rs mounted on the right side. The slide is missing. In looking around for either a new slide or a complete sight it has been strongly suggested to me that I consider replacing the Lyman with a Redfield 80. I like the idea of keeping the Lyman but they certainly are not as easy to come by. Should I broaden my horizons and consider other sights? Are there pros and cons to the Lyman and Redfield? Would the mounting screws and stock cutaway even line up with the Redfield? From what I am being told, the Lyman that was on this rifle looks like an early(even prewar) short slide 48rs. Much of what I am finding online seems to boil down to personal preference. I have no experience with these sights so your experiences and suggestions would be most welcome."
