I have a chance to buy a Remington 870 Express Synthetic for 350$ cash. I just realized it only shoots 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells though. Is it worth me getting the Super Magnum and spending 200 more $ on a gun just because it can shoot 3 1/2 inch shells. This will be my first shotgun too and I have never even shot a shotgun before. Hopefully I like it:p I got my PAL today finally, I am excited. Any tips would be great thanks!

Patrick,

you can buy a remington 870 express magnum 3 1/2" chamber for 450 bucks @ wholesale. If you really want to shoot 3 1/2" it's worth it for only 100 bucks mare than the one you're looking at.

The only reason for wanting to shoot 3.5" out of an 870 is the hard core, long-range goose hunter who likes recoil!

There is basically nothing the 3.5" does that you can't do with a quality 3" shell, i.e., hevi-shot, etc... Since you're looking at the Express model, I'm guessing that price is a factor. Have you actually priced the cost of factory 3.5" shells???

Unless you're looking for a NIB shotgun, check out the EE, there are a number of reasonable deals for good, used 870s.

If I absolutely had to have a 3.5" chambered 12 ga. I'd save my pennies and pick up a good quality semi-auto. Better choice for taming the heavier recoil offered by the 3.5". Something that your shoulder will thank-you for after a long day waterfowl hunting!

If you're just looking at hunting bunnies or upland game like grouse, etc...you definitely don't need the 3.5"!

If you really want a 3 1/2 870 Express you can mail order one from Cabela's in Winnipeg for $369.99 plus taxes and shipping.

I think it's a stupid idea though, get a three-incher. It's all you'll ever need and your wallet and shoulder will thank you. The 3 1/2 doesn't shoot any farther or harder than the three-inch shell, just puts more shot in the air.

And check Cabela's prices for the 870 Express synthtic in 3-inch too.

I would have thought 275-300 would be the price range for a used express. Check EE & compare. Being able to shoot 3 &1/2 wont hurt & is there if u are pass shooting geese. I still shoot 2 3/4 mostly over decoys, but most of the guys that come up to hunt do shoot some 3&1/2 each year. AJ
