I was wondering what the correct top hand guard should look like for a 1917 Remington Mosin... I came into this gun recently and while checking it out determined that it is all matching Remington parts and in very good condition. It does have the SA stamp on it as well as a few small symbols here and there in addition to the Remington markings.

The only thing is the top hand guard, it is different wood, appears to be shellaced slightly too long and made from aluminum, it's also cracked along it's entire length :( ... I'm assuming that this was replaced in Finland at some point.

So any idea what the correct top guard looks like [and where I can get one :) ]?

Seeing as the rifle was in the possession of the Finnish Army [SA], whatever top handguard is on it now is likely "correct" for its last hurrah. I know what you mean, though, and I can't help with that question.

Hey Sean!

Most of the 1891's I have seen that have Finn property marks on them have a little bit of a hodgepodge of parts. From my understanding the Finns used whatever parts from heaps of rifles in stores to create as many serviceable weapons as possible. The bright side to this is that most of the Finnish work to these rifles was very well done, with a majority of SA marked rifles shooting rather well in comparison to standard Russian arms.

Here is a link to an "all original" 1917 Remington to give you an idea of stock material.

Yea - I kinda figured that ... though it has a really poor fit, about 5mm longer than it should be.

Everything that is numbered on this gun matches - everything that isn't is Remington, so it didn't get heavily redone....

Went looking to all the usual suspects for a walnut top guard. No dice..

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Sean. I have one at home and can send you pics of the handguard if you like. Mine is SA marked also. Check your stock and see if there's a circular marking on the right side of the butt. It would be the German DuetcheReich symbol possibly. I couldn't make out what it was on mine, and others on here clued me in.

I had assumed it was the Remington cartouche... http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/R02404.jpg

yea - those pins are brass - right?

I definitely have a replacement & seems like an original will be impossible to find, :(

Are the sling swivels correct as well? mine has them - or did the fins add them?

Great Remington - it doesn't look like the finns renumbered any parts - it doesn't even have the 200m sight notch modification - great snag!
