I got this Remington no6 probably 5 years ago now, really it was a parts lot that I bought on CGN.

I have been working on it for while now, I had it shooting with the old stock on it but it had like a 10" LOP and the butt stock was loose and fit like crap but for my then 8 year old daughter it was a good fit. She's 11 now and its to small for her so I decided to revisit the ole Remington.

that's the back story on it, this was also the first rifle stock I've ever made. wow that is a lot of work and I didn't even have to inlet a receiver.

first off when I got it, it was 32 rimfire, and had no springs or cocking arm

so I made the 2 springs for it, then made the cocking piece, then machined a 22 barrel to fit the receiver so I can shoot it more then a few times.

then this summer I started on making a new stock for it, wow learned a lot, mostly that I don't have the patience to work with wood.

just last night I made the butt plate, it was a piece of 1 1/4 brass pipe I cut length wise hammered it flat into a plate then cut the shape out and cleaned it up a bit, there are still a few hammer marks visible in it but I think its fine

now the receiver, breach block and hammer are going to Oskar Kob to be CCH

then I need to get the barrel blued and figure out what to use for a rear sight, I don't like the Cooey one I have now.

I have enough of the same wood used in the stock to make a knife handle too, so ill grind a old file down and make a little 3" fixed knife to go with the rifle.

here are pics, ill add more when I get the stock finish on it and the parts come back from CCH

(*disclaimer* I know to the real gunsmiths out there and wood/metal workers this is rough and not perfect fitting and there would be lots of people that wouldn't be proud of this work)

HAHAHA I was waiting for some one to ask about that, honestly I just like it more. I think it looks better. before making the one I did I tried flipping it and it works just fine, sights come into picture right away and on need to move your head any higher or lower, I put my cheek t the sock and I see down the sights. (although it for an 11 year old so i hope it works the same for her)

I like the feel of the tang on the bottom while its being carried it and a smooth top/comb. similar to a Lee Enfield/p14 butt stock's grip

edit pics, its flipped the "normal" way now

Looks great. I grab these when the price is right. I have converted 3 now to centerfire and rechambered to 32 S&W long.
I shoot 90 gr SWC out of them with trailboss and are quite fun to shoot. I love that you are bringing another one back to life. It’s a lot of work but worth it and very satisfying to shoot again.

yeah I plan to do something similar, when got my first one it was chambered in 32 rimfire so I chambered it in 32 s&w and then used 27cal hilti blanks in the drilled out brass and shot a round ball. it sucked to reload so I went 22 rimfire. one day I want to make a .17 rimfire barrel for it.

I still need a breach block for my other no6, that one I'm going to convert to centerfire and then chamber it in 25 acp, and I still have the other barrel in 32 s&w so ill just use regular centerfire brass in it.

one day I want to get another no6 receiver so I can make a combo pack without touching my daughters rifle.

i want to make a case for it so its 2 receivers and 4 barrels (rimfire receiver with 22 and 17 barrel, with a centerfire receiver with a 25 and 32 barrel (both receivers CCH, matching butt stocks on both and all 4 barrels with matching length, taper, forestocks and sights))

OMG...please change that stock...It looks ridiculous. Youve done some nice work bringing that back. The comb needs to be upside right to aim it....

I guess I could have just dropped the comb so I can use it with iron sights easily. with it the other way its high I cant get down on the sights without thinking about it after I pull it up. At the same time as building this I was building my 500 jeffery on a P14, so I made this stock to feel and look similar to the p14 butt stock.

this is just a pic of a p14 I stole from the internet

if I did make a new butt stock because as you point out, it looks wrong, even though it functions just fine. id have to go with some type of pistol grip so it doesn't looks like a boat rudder

The top line of the P14 butt is far from straight. If the upper wrist line is extended to the buttplate, it would hit the buttplate about two thirds to three quarters down from the heel.

it doesn't look the exact same but looks can be deceiving, when I put a straight edge down the barrel and measure the gap from the straight edge to the top of the butt plate I get 3 1/4" when I flip the butt to the "proper" way I get 3 1/8" basically the butt plate doesnt actually move when flipped either way

the factory butt stock measures 3 1/8" the proper way, and 3 1/8" when flipped but its short in length, if it was longer id bet it would measure 3 1/4" or even maybe 3 3/8"

when I measure my P14 i get 3 1/8" and when I measure my merkel sxs I get 3 1/16",

so the butt plate is in the same place (within 1/8") weather I have it "upside down" or right way up and it compares to some other rifles, not all though my model 70 have next to no drop its about 1"

thinking back I could have made the top of the butt stock a little straighter so I could cut a little grip into it similar to a Lee Enfield butt stock or the P14 shown in the pic but I wanted to keep it light, small and thin but then it would also not have the just over 3" drop it should have

so I guess after all that, I can just flip the butt stock and clean up the little receiver inletting before finishing the stock just so people don't ask about it lol. the butt plate would be in the same place, it wouldn't feel as good to hold with one hand though, also it would be teardrop shaped the wrong way.

ok so after a little bit of thought and getting my daughter to shoot the gun for 30 rounds playing with the stock. I'm going to flip it and install it the "proper" way, just for the mental health of my fellow gun owners.

She shoots it fine either way and has no preference to which way the butt stock goes. I didn't tell her its for her I just ask if she wanted to go shooting and I was watching her groups and how easy the gun pointed for her, there was no noticeable difference.

and I planned on updating this thread once it gets back form CCH and once the stock is finished but it seemed the way I had it people didn't want to hear it lol

so. fine guys, the tang is now at the top and ill update the pics in the OP to show that.

Thank God! HAHAHAH

That will be a great little gun for your daughter.

Hahaha well I'm not here to ruffle any feathers or anything and I do want the rifle to be interesting to others who view it and not just thinking half baked for wanted a different style buttstock, personally I don't really care either way, I'm just loving my 500 Jeffery P14 and how it carries so I used its design when building the old tilting block rifles stock (I do know the tang on the bottom is so you don't lose the rifle when using the bayonet if it gets caught on something, and its nice to be able to use the bottom tang to pull my 500J tight into my shoulder when firing but its defiantly isn't needed or even look correct on this rifle.)

but to regain your confidence in my ideas, I do have this ^^ thread going, so that should show I'm not always half baked and can build a nice looking rifle

32 colt works good in a 32 rf conversion, just have to change the firing pin location...I've got one in 32 rf, 32 colt, 22k hornet, 25 rf,and some parts rifle, all in stevens marksman models, the one-inch 32 colt, has to be one of my favorites to shoot, very accurate, and soft on the shoulder.
Cheers
Brian
