I was wondering what to buy. I was going to buy a Weatherby mark v in 257. I now see the remington has a 50th aniversary mod 700lss chambered in 257 at half the price. My only real concern is accuracy. I have read about a few people having accuacy issues with the mark v. It soundls like its a real pain in the butt to deal with warranty issues when the gun has to be shipped to the states for work. I wonder what type of accuracy to expect out of the remington since there is no guarentee.

Thanks

I owned two weatherby mark V rifles, and neither was as accurate as my remington 700s.I have owned several 700s ,and loaded for many more, and all would do better than the 1-1/2" at 100 yards that weatherby guarantees. In fact almost all would do 1" or better. My Mark Vs would do better than 1-1/2" but no better than 1".

Or just buy a Vanguard starting at 539.00. My Vanguards were more accurate out of the box than the 700's that I have had...

I thought Remington guarantees 3 shot group accuracy at 100 yds to be under 1.5" with premium amunition? During the past five years, I have had several new Remingtons, and all shot better than that... But, you can not "tinker" with any new gun and claim warranty.

Remington are nice, but not even remotely comparable to a Weatherby Mk V. They are expensive, but are a thing of beauty.

Do you buy your guns to shoot or to look at?For about the price of a mark V,you can buy a 700sps,add a premium after market barrel, and have a mcmillan installed. The result will be a better quality barrel, better stock, and normally, more accuracy for the same money. And you can choose your own barrel contour, length of pull, and overall weight.

Under 1.5 inches at 100 yards....my old 8mm Mauser shoots better than that.
Remington rifles are the best choice, more after market stuff is made for them.

Never had any accuracy problems with the Mk V's I have owned. And all my guns are bought for shooting, not to hang on a wall

In my honest opinion weatherbys are over priced, hideously ugly and carry a certain personality with them that screams "look at me, im a douchebag". No offence to any weatherby lovers out there, to each his own, but somthing about them makes me want to puke.

Heres my problem. I am very leary of spending over $2000 on a rifle and not have it shoot well. Weatherby i believe guarentee 1.5" at 100. I could probably live with this but for that type of cash i feel you should at least get sub moa. If the gun doesnt shoot 1.5 weatherby says they will warranty it. A Canadaian member of the weatherby forum pm me regarding a 257 ulw he's having trouble with. The red tape involved with getting the gun shipped into the u.s and out again is a complete nightmare. I have read of other people not being happy with the accuracy of their Weatherbys. I will be honest i really was leaning toward the accumark because im Lh and wanted the accubrake. Not so much for the recoil but muzzle lift. I want a real quiet shooter that i can see the re-action of what ever i shoot in the scope. The Remington has no accuracy guarentee so im on the hook for the upgrades if im not happy allthough at half the price thats alot of upgrades. I have never dealt with any gunsmiths in Mb. I asked wholesale sports who they reccomend and they gave me ultimate accuracy's number. I guesse i will probably roll the dice and buy the Remington. Theres no point and having such a flat shooting caliber thats not real accurate. At least with cars you can take them for a test drive.

Thanks

Then buy a Sako since they guarantee 5 shots in moa. That is a better guarantee than any weatherby for a price about the same as a mark V.

I love my vangaurd, especially for what I paid for it!

And I would LOVE to be able to afford a Mark V Accumark... what a rifle!! If I came into some money I'd be all over one of those in a heartbeat. But I'm only 23, give it time.

My thoughts are... I could buy a 700 and upgrade it to shoot as well as a mark v sure...

But (being a car guy..) that sounds like buying a civic, changing everything about it to keep up with a vette, and then at the end of the day, still be a civic owner. Maybe a bad analogy but thats what I got out of this thread...

For me I would rather buy a superior rifle right off the get go than have to modify a lesser rifle to get to the same level.

Not that there is anything wrong with the 700, but to me its just obvious which is a better rifle... to each there own I guess.

I'm with mogul pro, I really like my Vanguard, and would love to own a Mark V. I like the Remington's as well. I would buy that new 700 LSS or whatever it is in .257 Wby Mag, and use the left over money in your budget and buy really, really nice glass. My $0.02.

I have a Vangaurd sub MOA in 257 and it will shoot 1" with anything I have tried in it. It shoots 3/8 with 110 accubonds. I bought it of EE and it came with a removable brake. It has no noticable recoil with the brake on.

I also have a rem 700 in 25-06 that shoots 1 inch.

I am with stubblejumper on the Sako. I set my wife up with a finnlight and she gets 5 shots into 5/8 with handloads in 25-06.

I have never had a remington that would not do a 1" group with handloads and am new to the weatherbys. They all seem to shoot good with handloads and a bit of tweaking. I think money is well spent on quality glass...it makes a big difference. Whichever you chose, I am sure you will love the 257 wby mag.

I would go for the Remington, however the new Weatherbys, made in the USA are nice, and for some people their stocks fit better than any other. So if you like the fit or the looks, take the Weatherby. If you want a gun just as accurate, save the money and get a Remington. I don't feel that Sako is in the same class as Weatherby, yet are priced the same.

I dont believe you can go wrong with the remington. The remingtons I have owned all shot great.

By the way arent the Vanguard rifles made by Howa and imported by Weatherby?
