Gentlemen: I just purchased a (new) Remington 7600 Patrol gun in .308. It sports Wilson Combat sights, 16.5" bbl and black synthetic furniture. I thought it would make a nice brush gun for whitetails, moose and bear. I suspect that it will be loud with some muzzle blast. Has anyone had any first hand experience with this model? Opinions?

thanks, Darryl

My experience with the Remington pumps has overall been quite positive. These rifles handle nicely, they can be carried in a scabbard as easily as a lever action due to the absence of a bolt handle, and they are quick to bring on target.

The rifles tend to shoot quite well and 1.5 MOA seems to be the norm out of the box. Due to the stiffness of your short barrel, I doubt if your accuracy will be any worse, although velocity may suffer. Choosing loads with 200 gr bullets might mitigate this to some degree as there is less powder in the cartridge and velocity is a little lower to start with.

A 16.5" barrel on any high velocity centerfire rifle will bark, there's no question.

Hey Darryl

Please report back on the gun when you get a chance to use it. I've been looking sideways at that model for the same reasons you stated.

I love very short barrel carbines for my hunting big game here in Ontario. I also believe as Boomer does - that by using a "heavy-for-calibre" bullet (200 in this case) with the requisite lesser charges of an appropriate powder can help to reduce muzzle blast without a significant loss in practical power. I have several 16.5" barreled rifles and - for example - I find 250s best in my 358/Ruger77Frontier instead of 200s or 225s. I still need my ears on for safety however - especially at the range.

i ran a bunch of those 200 grain imperials through my savage 99 back in the 80's - every round showed signs of EXCESS PRESSURE- blackened primers, swelled heads- if i had to do it over again, i'd pull the bullets as they're more suited to the '06- your 308 has a practical limit of about 180 grains unless you have the ability to seat the bullets long, like in an '06 magazine well- go over 180 grains in the standard 308 well and you're sitting the bullets IN THE POWDER

...can anyone tell me if 870 shotgun stocks would fit fit the 7600??
...It might be an interesting build if one could fit a speedfeed pistol grip stock on this rifle. What is the mag. capacity? :confused:I checked remmys LE site but could not find the mag capacity info.
Thx,
Mad Mikey:p

I don't think those are legal in Canada any more because the same mag fits and is marked for use in the 742/7400 (semi-auto) series of rifles.

ram-line- and theywere junk- i think i've still got one kicking around the bottom of my parts box- when you put them in a 76 series, you gain a bolt hold open device which can be a pita if you're not used to it
