Remington prices...WTH??

The last week of December I advertised a NIB 700 SPS stainless here for $675 shipped, mentioning that as of Jan 1st the price on new Remingtons would be going up at least 15%. At that time WSS had last years catalog price of $629, although they had none in stock. I had 9 different guys PM me telling me I was out to lunch on my price.

Jan 1st they went to what...$799? The guy that paid my asking price feels pretty good. The 9 guys who refused mine at $675? Not so much...

With a weak dollar, these prices are here for while guys. Even if the dollar recovers a bit against the US buck, we won't see that until NEXT years stock is ordered. So for at least the next year, shop around...

I bought a new 700 XCR Tactical in Feb '08 from one of the sponsors here and paid $1125. Now that rifle is 1650+. That's an increase of close to 50%. Explain that one to me......and please don't use the value of our dollar as an excuse.

I can't explain that one either. I don't know if it was our shop you bought your gun from but when we went to reorder about 2 months after the previous order the wholesale price shot up through the roof. We were given a price hundreds of dollars more at wholesale than we had on the one left on the rack at retail!. We considered cancelling the order but we were told thats the way it is and if we didn't want the rifles then they would sell them to someone else. We buy from distributors and not direct from Remington. We mark up our new guns at 25%. Phil.

I ordered my stainless marlin guide gun just over a year ago (Dec 2007) from WSS for $599. Just checked the website now and its $889.95. $599 was the cheapest i had ever seen them though. I waited a couple months while it was on back order but i knew it was a deal worth waiting for.

One of the guys in the gun room at Gagnon sports in Oshawa told me once that they only make $20-$30 on new guns. Thats why he couldn't move any on the price. What a load of BS. Hes not one of their sales staff that I like much.

We make more than $20-$30 on a new gun...if that was the case we couldn't stay in business. Our average mark up is 25% (you can do the math on what we paid for it). Please note this is our gross mark up and does not take into account any overhead. Phil.

I think a 25% markup is completely reasonable. You have expenses to cover and have to make a living too.

Its comments like "We make $20-$30 of new gun sales" that make you not want to shop there because you know he is a liar. What else is he lieing about. Also hes and idiot so you just don't want to deal there in general.

keep in mind that is just one guy. most of their staff is alright.

happy with my SPS Tactical

I know what you are saying, but am happy I didn't delay. Paid 599 (from out of province so GST only) then got my $40 rebate.

Remington is slow with the rebates. "google" the rebate form on the web, at the bottom there is a phone number for the agency in Quebec handling the rebates. Call them and they'll look it up and tell you approx. when it will be mailed to you.

I know what you are saying. The same thing happened to me with Rem 870 Marine prices. I missed the boat and the price shot up like $250 in 6 months. :(

I learned my lesson and when the cost of Dinosaur juice drives our dollar up again, I'm gonna buy instead of waiting.

BTW, I bought a 700 SPS before Christmas and mailed out the $40 rebate about 72 hours after I got the rifle and I have yet to receive my funds from Rem in the mail. Double :(

I think part of the price jack is the Obama factor and the Great Canadian Gun Grab factor. Prices are bound to drop, or places will go out of business or both once this wave is over. (Either because the gun grab failed, or succeeded)

It could be true.
My markup on bows is between $60-$80.
That works out to ~10% gross margin.
That's just to stay even remotely close to stores such as Lebaron and BassPro and Cabelas.
They do so much volume that my distributor price is almost what they sell at retail for. In some cases my price is worse than retail.

Fact of life for smaller stores.

Id rather pay the extra mark up for good customer service to be honest... I guess a lot of people look for deals, but Id rather support the dealers that support me...

I mean if its a huge price discrepancy, then ya, maybe looking around is an option.....

My experience with that store is they're all full of ####.

Just got my $40 cheque from Remington today. Took like 3 months, but it is here now.
