Remington R1 Commander - what about them?

Recently my Colt Series 70's pistol died.

Keeps jamming, can't get it fixed no matter what.

So got rid of it, but kept the holstes, magazines, etc.

Recently my dealer started selling Remington 1911's. Got to handle the R1 Commander and I really like the look and feeling of it.

Nothing fancy, just a plain old 1911 Commander.

What about them? I've heard mixed things about them, but since 1911's are not so common over here in Switzerland, I thought I better ask here.

Should I get one or should I get something else?

They are not bad, series 80 so I will never own one. Check out an STI Spartan IV if you like commander style in that same price range.

It's interesting, but a bit goofy that they kept the government grip safety and hammer. If they had gone with the proper ring hammer and rat tail grip safety I could be on it - the FP block can be removed.

Right now it looks like a shortened 1911 government model.

And to add to Hitzy's comment - Al Flaherty's just announced a sale on Spartans. $750 I think. I've a Spartan IV in 9mm and it's pretty nice. The bull barrel and .355 hole gives it some heft. Remington has a MUCH nicer finish, however. I don't get squishy over matte pistols, really.

Thanks guys. STI's probably much more expensive over here.

I just like the classy plain look of the Remington.

What can you say about the quality of the Remington?

Ditto. I've the plain old R1 myself and it shoots very well for me. And since I like the GI look and the semi-polished finish, it's a keeper.
