Today I did something very uncharacteristic - I actually read the manual that comes with the Remington R1. There on page 14 was the very problem I encountered with my blued R1; a protruding firing pin, c/w pictures!
They even discuss what to do if this occurs, but don't mention what might happen if you were to inadvertently load and fire the gun with the firing pin protruding. I'm not about to try it and find out ....
The suggested method of resetting it is to ease the slide forward and press the trigger, thereby releasing the firing pin. But, it goes on to say that if the problem persists, the gun should be shipped back under warranty.
I solved the problem with mine by installing a heavier firing pin spring, something that ought to be factory standard.
