remington rand 1911a1 find!!!

I think i will just keep it as a shooter, thanks to all who responded, cheers Glenn

Is the barrel in it a GI one? If it's the proper GI barrel for a Remington Rand it will have a "HS" [for High Standard mfg] on one side of the lug and a "P" [proof] on the opposite side.

I don't see it being nickel plated as a bad thing. It shows that someone really cared for it and valued the pistol enough to have it nickeled. It is part of it's history.

Circa ~ 20 years ago Lever Arms got in several cases of old USGI 1911's. Some were very nice, original, matched, examples in varying condition. There were some real beaters, too. And some that were completely nickeled. I recall some of the "beater" ones were going for $99 each..... Some of them cleaned up quite nicely, though:

That was 1991. The 1911's and 1911A1's were nickel plated. Joe Salter brought in a few crates. The pistols were wrapped in Cuban Newsprint and were imported from East Germany. I saw the crates and the Cuban newpapers. Someone who worked for Joe Salter PM'd me or replied to a post and said they were used in the Bay of Pigs deal in 1962.

Could make a good snowy day Restoration project. Got nothing to do for an hour or two do a little work on it. By the spring you will have a historic firearm you restored yourself. Something a little more satisfying shooting a firearm you restored.
