Hello! I have a Remington Rand M 1911 A1 U.S. Army. Serial number is 121###x. Condition is very near mint with only a few holster scuffs on the left side of the grip. Would like to know a little more about these guns if any one has any info. Would be nice to know the year it was made or in service. What is a rough value on a 45 like this? Thought about selling it, but I may regret that...
Thanx,
Scott

Have a moderator move this over to the Milsurp sub forum if you don't get a decent answer here. This is more about military antiques that those guys really know than typical handgun pricing.

And they'll want pictures as well. Post the pics with a hosting site and then post the links to the pics here.

I am NOT an expert, but have been doing some research on M1911A1s myself lately.....hopefully if I get any of this wrong others will chime in and correct me:
Based on the 1,218,949 serial number, that is a 1943 Ithaca frame. So the Ithaca frame and Remington Rand slide mean this is not an original pistol. It has what appears to be a large SA stamped on the right side (although in the pics, the A is hard to make out) which would indicate it has been rearsenaled and refinished by Springfield Arsenal. US bluebook value is about $700 (would have been $900 if the slide and frame matched).

Here is a link to a useful website that gives make and age based on serial numbers:

Nice gun!

This is actually an Ithaca M1911A1.

The pistol went to Springfield Arsenal (note the marking 'SA' on the right side of the frame) and was rebuilt. This is most likely when it received a Remington Rand slide and was refinished.

These legitimate arsenal re-built M1911A1's can still potentially bring about $900 these days.

Did you buy that out of the McSherry auction a few years ago? I swear I've seen that gun before.

Here's an Ithaca close in serial number to your frame:

Ithaca was a crude maker, nowhere near the quality of Colt or even Remington Rand. US&S had a crude appearance but seemed to function very well in Government testing and were considered of high quality.

At the arsenal, it was matching up with a slide off a Remington Rand like this one:

A fresh parkerizing, and your gun was ready to be put back into U.S. military service.

DCM sold a bunch of these pistols back in the day, I think most of the rebuilds were commercially sold as typically the 'vet bringbacks' are not re-built as most re-builds happened after WWII. Unless we start talking M1911's.

Thanx for all the feed back! I ended up getting the gun a year or so ago for $150 off an old timer friend of mine. Its a great shooter and think I should keep it for now. It shoots better than some of my newer pistols. After I posted this up, I figured something wasn't rite as I could not match a serial number to Remington Rand. Also Steve, those are some nice pistols you posted up. If anyone else has any cool old .45's, feel free to post up on this thread!
Thanx again,
Scott
