I know this is an old subject but a buddy had his remington go off when turning the safety off today. Thankfully no one was hurt .

My question is if he put a new trigger like a trigger tech or similar , will that fix the issue?

There is probably a recall available for it - there was with mine. Contact Gravel Agency with the serial number and they can figure it out for you.

As to your question about replacing the trigger entirely, its not the cheapest way to go about it but I don't see why it wouldn't do the job.

Mine went off as well on the very first time I loaded a 300 win mag round. Will spare the details and the lessons learned and luckily no one got hurt. 15 years later many deer shot and never did it again. I did eventually send it in for the warranty though and recommend anyone else in question does the same.

OP,do you have the slightest clue which trigger group is installed in this rifle?

Receiver serial number pre-fix letter(s) will get you to the decade of manufacture.
4,5,6,7digit,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,TT,S,RR,RAR pre-fix letter(s)

Remove the barrel action from the stock.
Douce the trigger group w/ solvent, acetone to remove dried oils etc.

IF the trigger has been previously molested, have it adjust it correctly by a COMPETENT 'smith..
Coat the 3 adjustment screws w/ clear finger nall polish.
Function/Ops check trigger.
Re-install the barreled action into the stock.

Not sure what trigger group is in it. I haven't seen it in person. A far as I know the barreled action has never been out of the stock.

Not if he has his finger on the trigger or fails to clean his rifle periodically. Poor maintenance is the biggest cause of trigger malfunctions.

A replacement trigger will also fail if it is not maintained.

Considering the comment of "never been out of the stock" you might be onto something.

I'd still check if it's one of the recalled rifles though. Doesn't take much effort to fire off an email...

He definitely didn't have a finger on the trigger. I'm not totally sure a out the cleaning. It was just speculation on that.

I do not know how that particular Rem trigger works - but, for sure, is some simple Mauser triggers that are improperly set-up - both the safety and the trigger sear hold back the firing pin - if not done correctly, can pull the trigger with safety "on" - gun does not fire then - but the trigger sear has not re-set to grab the cocking piece - that could be for several reasons - but the gun DOES fire when the safety is subsequently released - nothing left to hold that firing pin back. Dirt, grunge, warpage of wood stock can all cause that - or somebody with most, but not all, relevant understanding trying to "improve" that trigger pull or cocking piece with a hone.

this could be part of the problem...here's one I got a while back that appeared to have never been out of the stock since it was assembled in 1976....

Why replace it without first diagnosing the malfunction? A simple cleaning may be all it needs... find out first. Even a repair would be a fraction of the cost of replacing it...

guntech-
Most people for convenience & ignorance purposes, replace parts.

Rembo-
That trigger group needs to be completely disassembled & cleaned.

Rembo,
Just dunk that sucker in some diesel fuel and blow it off with the air hose. Should be good for another forty years.
