Out of the 740/742/7400 is there a winner or are they all trash? I've seen the first two for around the $300 mark and the 7400 for $400. Are these deals on them? Did the issues with the earlier models get cleared up with the 7400?

I hear the 742 is even better then the 750....and the 7400 had the most issues. I dont know this first hand but I was told this by 3 different gun shops when I was looking at semi-auto rifles needless to say I bought a Benelli R1 and saved the hit or miss opperation and accuracy.

Wound up with a "like new" 742 as part of a trade for a decoy in 1985 ... used it for about 8 years without a single malfunction ... Fed it Remington 180 SP's only. Sold it to a buddy at work who's been using it ever-since, again, not a single malfunction ... now 20 years plus.
"Our" recommendations .... Don't over-lubricate, rather keep it on he somewhat "dry side"; keep the chamber scrupulousy clean ( as well as the rest of the gun ) and don't "slam" the magazines home ( buggering the mag & mag latch) ... No problems !

I have owned a 742 in308 for more than 40years. If you use good ammo you will never have a problem. Also keep the gun clean. Good Luck. Dabbler.

My 7400 stopped having issues once I started using 7600 mags. It is reliable even using reloads with regular lee dies. Great short range bush carbine.
