Good points. The 300 Win mag is likely a better choice for a one gun hunter. But I and most on this site are not, I suspect. So, I look at it differently. The beauty with my 300 Rum is that it is so bloody consistent and easy to shoot that all I really do is validate my drop chart a few times a year, and shoot a few long range groups, always giving the barrel lots of time to cool down. For serious practice, I use my .308 and heat 'er up regularly. At this rate, I suspect my 300 Rum to last at least another decade, or more, which is pretty darn good barrel life in my books. I suspect I'll be rebarreling my 308 long before the Rum. YMMV.
