Shooting Remington 16 ga black hulled ammo at skeet on sunday and found a shell with no brass -just formed plastic with the primer seated. Have shot
100's of thouands of rounds over the years and never seem this. Probably dangerous to shoot. Anyone seen this before??

I've never seen it or heard about such a thing, although that does'nt mean much :p But I would definetly take a picture of it and send it with a letter to the company saying WTF? What ever comes out of this keep us informed, I'm really curious of the way and what Remington will respond. :)

That's a new one on me. I've had shells where the brass base and the primer come apart from the hull but not one with the primer in the plastic but no brass. If there was no brass I wonder whether the shell would have even fired as it presumably would have slipped forward into the chamber beyond the point where the firing pin would have reached it.

I'd definitely take it up with Remington and let us know how it works out. Not too long go a shooting friend had problems with brass/hull separations with some 28 gauge STS and Remington provided him with replacement ammo.

The shell never was fired & remains unfired -- there were 3 like that in 1 box.
checked the rest of the case and they were ok.
Remington USA, couldn't help me because of US border restrictions, but put me in touch with their Canadian rep.
Cheers

The brass is only there for the extractor to grip; it provides nothing in terms of 'containing' pressure.

That being said, it could lead to a catastrophic failure if you hadn't noticed it (like anybody WOULDN'T notice it). That shell fires, but doesn't get extracted, you load the next shell in pushing the old hull into the forcing chamber, KABOOM. Unlikely, possible?

Quality control/inspection hiccup on the promo shell line.

Sent the entire box back to Remington (Gravelle Agencie, PQ) with
a NICE letter ... you may be treated to a whole flat of ammo as a
gesture of good will !

I have stopped using Remington shotshells. I find they are way to dirty. Almost looks like they are using black powder.

I have seen all manner of odd things come out of shotshell boxes but that IS a new one on me. Let us know what Remington has to say.

I know what Winchester has to say when some of their products fail and they don't seem to give a damn.

Remington USA referred me to their Canadian Agency -- they didn't want the shells back but said that they would send me some complmentary ammo.
By the way, those black hulled 16ga shells are not promo stuff and are reviered by the 16 ga community as the best 16 ga loads and for reloads in the industry.

Yes they are but a premium brand is just as susceptible to manufacturing glitches.

A shooting friend had a bad run of 28 gauge Remington STS target shells. On several the brass separated from the plastic upon firing. Fortunately he noticed the problem because otherwise he might have unknowingly pushed the remaining plastic from the previous shell into the forcing gone and fired a live round with a partially obstructed barrel .

I've had more problems with Winchester AA target shells than any other including a couple of very bad barrel obstructions caused by underpowered primers.

The best 16ga. loads were C.I.L. high brass. I am still using them.
