I ordered a new Remington shotgun through Wholesale Sports in Calgary. They said they would notify me when it was available. I got a phone message from them the other day saying that it was no longer available as Remington has discontinued it. It was the Remington 870 SPS Super Magnum.

Anyone know why it was discontinued? Any recommendations for an equivalent/replacement? I prefer Remington pumps but am open to something new. Or maybe I should just go with a Remington 870 Wingmaster. Need some input.

Thanks.

SPS Super Magnum I assume is just an express version but allows for 3.5" shells... just get the 870 Express Magnum.

This is on sale at LeBaron's. You can order it through the mail.

I did check it out in-store and looked pretty much the same as the SPS.

Here is the link:

At $332 it is hard to beat that deal.

Let us know what you decide.

332 for a new shotgun looks like a very good deal to me. I do not know whether it is good for trap shooting. I have been looking for a used 870 Wingmaster and this one seems a better deal. Any inputs ?

Wingmasters show a lot more attention to finish than the Expresses. I suppose that if the Wingmaster is a decent price it would be a good deal. Do you really need 3.5 inch shells?

Yeah, bigger isn't always better.
The stroke is going to be longer with the 3.5" shotgun, not to mention that unless you are doing some serious hunting you are never going to buy 3.5" shells.

If you want tactical (based on the avatar) I'd get a 3" Express Magnum or 2 3/4" 1100 (which I did) :)

If you want it to be a nice looking 870 then go for the Wingmaster as it does have a nicer finish.
However, if you were asking me what I'd do... I'd get the Express then get it "Armacoated" in whatever colour I wanted :D

Just stopped in and Accuracy Plus in Peterborough has a used 870 SPS Supermag for sale. Looks in decent condition. Has choke tubes, sling and truglo front bead. 28" barrel. $499.

Man, I never lsaw that deal at lebarons but I am suprised they never told me about it. I got a 28" barrel 870 express for $340 plus tax :( I did want the super magnum but never had the extra $40

stupid ******

Did anyone confirm - has Remington really discontinued the 870 Express SPS series?
Is this due to poor sales of the Super Magnum Shotgun series?

I'm about to buy my first shotgun and was under the impression that the 3.5" super-magnums were the latest & greatest - and was considering buying one of the 'combo' packages but now am concerned - why would it be discontinued... ?

Because it's a stupid pointless shotgun. Those with egos big enough to think they need 3.5" shells are paying more and getting the Wingmaster ;)

Well that's a timely comment - I was actually logging on to post a question asking whether there was any DISadvantage to the 3.5" SPS 870's - I was setting out to purchase the standard 870 3" magnum combo but my local store didn't have any in stock - they do have the SPS 3.5" combo, and the price difference was negligible. I was concerned that (a) there'd be a longer stroke, (b) it would be a heavier gun, and (c) it may not be as time-tested an action and wouldn't be as reliable with 2.75" shells - which are all I'd ever be shooting anyhow.

I think what was meant was the SPS Supermag was being discontinued. They still make the Supermag in Express and Wingmaster.

This year they are making the Express Supermag in full camo, so I am guessing that is why the SPS may be discontinued.

Just to clarify as it appears there may be some confusion, the SPS is another model of 870. SPS does not stand for Supermag.

SPS guns are in full camo, have twin beads, 3 chokes tubes, sling and the actions seem to be a bit more smoother than the Expresses.

Last year, you could get a 3" or 3.5" (supermag) in the SPS, the Express or the Wingmaster.

Thanks for the clarification. It's a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what's what in their lineup. SPS = 'Special Purpose Synthetic'.

I think that they are coming out with a little newer supermag model. Something to do with a stronger rib on the barrel and a couple other wee mods. All I know now is that that particular weapon has gone up in price over now a hundred dollars in the last year, for virtually the same gun. Last one I saw was at Bass Pro for I think was about 460 bucks. Brutal!:(

Just picked up a new 870 Express 3" magnum 'combo' yesterday (IC slug barrel and 28" ribbed). Horrible wood and mystery finish on the metal... but it gets me into the shotgun game for $500. Watch for this one on the EE once I can find a decent price on a used wingmaster. Appreciated the helpful input above.
