Some years back I saw the Spartan double rifles and it made me think of holding a .45/70 double rifle in my mitts while calling in a bull moose in a black spruce muskeg.

Over the years Remington has bought the spartan line and then I heard that there were problems with th 45/70 chambering and they were not going to continue it. However in the 2008 ANNUAL, Petersen's Hunting (gun catalog) I see the Sparton listed in 45/70.

Has anyone had any experience with it or know any FACTS about it?

I still may need one more gun in my collection and this may be it.

I had the 30-06 double (side x side) and had problems with it so I sent it back. My rifle became internet legend and gave all the Baikal doubles a bad reputation. I might get another as Baikal Canada has the 30-06 in stock right now. I think the 45-70 is still a long way off, at least that is what I have been hearing, which could be BS.

Do a search on Baikal SXS and you will find a detailed report from my rifle.

Here is the double rifle in 45/70 caliber at a Baikal show in 2006. They are not being imported here and I don't think the factory is mass-producing them yet.

While the Russian firearms lack finesse they make it up mostly in the construction - the sxs double rifle (read metal, the wood is just only acceptable) is no exception based on what I could tell from physical observations.....you can't overlook the "roughness" of the construction though :) Oh yeah, crude front sight as well and somewhat acceptable rear sight :)

The bbl regulation, however, for a double rifle in that price category would be my foremost concern......even for consistency to 50 yds. This may well vary among individual Baikals. Never shot one though.

Should it interest you - believe Williams Arms dot net (Port Perry, ON) has a used one chambered for Cal .30-06 .....yet to see one in 45-70

With Double Rifles, you get what you pay for. That is true for all the "modern" ones - with many old English black powder DRs, you still pay a premium, basically for collector's and sometimes not even collector's pieces.

Baikal made 45-70 insert barrels that were adjustable for their side-by-side shotguns a while back. They were quite inexpensive, don't know if they are still available.

I picked up a Baikal combination gun in 12g x 30-06. I absolutely love it. I can hit 1 gallon jugs with it off hand consistently at 100 yards and I dumped some partridge on the wing last fall with it. I thought it was a lot nice than the side by side, though.

Barrel regulation is not a problem with these guns. They have a screw-type adjustment mechanism located in the rib between the barrels which allows for horizontal spreading or tightening of the muzzles (I think they call it a jack-screw). I sold one recently, just got tired of it, but I have to admit that the thing worked. Almost any load could be brought to within a couple (horizontal) inches of spread from both barrels. It may not sound like much to a bolt-action guy, but for a low-priced double rifle it was amazing. The gun had a solid feel to it, and a scope was easily mounted using a one-piece ring/base combination mount sold for air rifle use. A cool toy, very different and neat to play with, for a price that is a tiny fraction of any double rifle I've ever seen.
