Forgot about having this Carbine, thought I would share it with members interested in Civil War Carbines.
REMINGTON SPLIT BREECH CARBINE, Made 1865 -1866 Caliber .56-50 Rim Fire
This was one of Remington's earliest production longarms made for metallic cartridge ammunition. On Oct. 24, 1864 15,000 "Split Breech" carbines, caliber .56-50, were ordered at $23.00 each. Delivery was completed on May 24, 1866, to late for the Civil War. After the War the War Department sold them back to Remington for $15.00 each and they in turn sold them to France , to be used in the Franco Prussian War. This accounts for their scarcity on the collector's market. The only marking is the US stamp on the top of the butt plate. These were the last type of arm supplied to the Union Government on contract prior to the end of the Civil War. Specimens in this caliber are very scarce and are still considered a Civil War Firearm by collectors.
Because of the deal between the Government and Remington buying back these guns (unissued) at a reduced price and Remington reselling at thier sell price, a law was enacted that the Government could no sell arms back to the original maker at reduced prices. Seems like a good deal for Remington and contractors. Score Remington 1, US Government 0
