anyone own one of these or has handled one? supposed to be a budget autoloader from Remmy, i assume to compete with the Mossberg 935 and Stoeger P-2000.

any thoughts or impressions?

Like Marlin said its a Baikal, imported into the US by Remington and branded Spartan. They are available in Canada under the original Baikal name and have been for some time. There have been quite a few comments on it in the "waterfowl gun" thread.

had no idea they were being marketed under the Baikal name, thanks. saw a couple references to them in that thread but assumed that they were like other Baikals and not really 'mainstream'.

what sortof warranty do the Baikal marketed ones have?
are the Remington branded ones identical, just rebranded as Remmys?

is it just a stripped down budget 11-87 design?

IMO if you really want a rifled barrel on a shotty you would be better off taking the money you would spend on a new rifled barrel for your auto/pump and picking up something like a single shot H&R Ultra Slug Hunter instead.
then you could set it up with a scope permanently mounted directly on the heavy rifled barrel for better accuracy than you could ever hope for in an 11-87, for the same or less money.

no quick follow-up shot but you wont be rapid-firing sabot slugs anyway.

Wow the remington is almost 100$ less and remington is supposed to be charging premium for having there name on the gun and the gun went from russia, to the USA, then to us,while the baikal came directly to us from russia...

Mostly due to numbers involved. The number of guns imported from Russia by Remington (for Canada and USA) is probably ten to twenty times larger than the number of firearms BaikalCanada is importing for Canada only. I guess Remmy negotiated a better deal.

Also note that the Baikal imported ones (at least the later ones) have sling swivels installed at the factory while the Remington imported ones come without that option.

In general I agree with your comments on the NEF. For the $ I think they are a great option esp. in 20ga. - as one member commented ... a great alternative to a muzzleloader (without all the mess).

I have a pump now with both barrels, but I'm always thinking of the next purchase... and as the wife has reminded me - there is only so much room in the gun safe :( .... and I still haven't found my Savage MLII

Guess I will need to buy the remington version if my hunting license ever finally shows up.

If you are in the Montreal area you should pay Terrebonne Chasse et Pêche a visit. He is a Baikal dealer. He sometimes has used ones in great condition for sale.
