remington sps varmint barrel chop what do you think.

I have a remington sps varmint in .308 that a 26 inch barell and I would like to cut the barell down to about 20 inches to make it a little lighter and more weildy what would be the disadvantages of this and how would it effect acuracy...thanks for your thoughts.

Chop it to twenty and never look back. You will be surprised at the positive difference it will make. Get a USMC crown while you are at it.
 
What's it for? If you are using your rifle for hunting or target shooting out to a quarter mile, there is nothing wrong with a 20" .308. However, if you have the long range bug and wish to reach out there to a half mile or so, the longer pipe would be an advantage, particularly if you want to shoot 155s at anything like 3000.
