anyone know of an action similar to remington that will fit in a choate varmint
stock?
thinking of building single shot switch barrel rifle but would prefer not to use the remington action. i have heard too many complaints on new remmie products.
i know one of the benchrest actions is a match but can't remember whose.
i also know hart makes their version of a remmie and is under $1000us but i believe noone here imports them.

Are you thinking about a Barnard S ?

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Rem action once you get rid of the new bolt shroud and stick it proper trigger on it. Depends if you can find a cheap old donor or need to buy new. If new then a custom action probably makes sense.

eg: I have a 6ppc I made from an old Rem 721 which, as you may know is a long action. Not the best for sure but with a take off benchrest barrel on it and my own lathe and reamer it cost me about $150 to make.

As Bedrock says, Remington 700 is the paradigm for bolt action rifles. Stiller, Barnard, Surgeon, Pierce, Nesika, RPA, etc. etc. all make actions with a Reminton footprint. And there is a reason for that too.

As to Remington quality, it is NOT the actions that have been a problem. They are still, in my opinion, the strongest, safest most reliable and most adaptable actions you can get on a factory rifle, but you will not find on in single shot. There are followers to make them single shot, but they are all repeaters. I have MANY custom rifles built on Remington and custom actions, and if gotten for the right price, a Remmy is a very good platform for building a custom.

Or... sell your stock and look for a good used Remington XR-100. Incredible platforms for customizing. Here is a photo of one of mine...
