Hey guys.

I'm looking at building up a lightweight model 7. Are there any aftermarket triggers that lock the bolt closed when the safety is on?

I'm used to every other brand of rifle, and rely on this feature.

Thanks!

Not sure about aftermarket, but lots of early factory Remington triggers had a safety that locked the bolt down. Try ultralight arms - I think they may have offered a safety for Remington triggers that did what you desire. Just not sure if it's compatible with the m7. The m7 safety rides closer to the bolt body than the 700.

The whole idea of opening bolt with safety on, was so there would be another safety feature to prevent a gun going off IE: so called
accidental discharge!

Going to bring this one back to life.

Big BRaz did you find an aftermarket trigger that locks the bolt closed?

What i understand with the old locking safeties, the bolt had a groove machined into it?

FYI, there are no aftermarket triggers that will lock down a Rem 700 or M7 bolt when activated. The lever affects the sear in the trigger housing... that's it.

A Rem bolt might be able to be modified to have a 3 position safety ala Win pre 64, but that is outside the trigger.

Actually, thats wrong. The early 700's had bolt locking safeties, the extended lever was later eliminated so you can unload your rifle with the safety "on". Nula still offers a safety that does lock the bolt but also adds a third position so you can safety unload the rifle with the safety engaged.

However the problem now is the newer bolt bodies don't all have the lock down slot mentioned by 69firebird. Infact I'm not sure the latest receiver bodies have the clearance slot milled along the trigger housing either.

You can use these safeties on a variety of aftermarket triggers that required a factory safety such as some of the timney's, and shilen.

I did find Gentry makes a 3 position safety and so does Pacific Tool. Gunsmithing required- drilling bolt handle for the lock etc.

If locking the bolt handle down when the safety is engaged is so important, there are better options than a Model 7. Try an X Bolt. You don't have to disengage the safety to raise the locked bolt either...

Very true-- I shoot left handed so any bolt actions I buy Weatherby mk5s. In this situation I bought a BNIB Rem 700 left hand from a friend who needed the money. It sat in my safe for the longest time (because I don't like Rem 700s) until I got bored and started working on it. Anyways got a new stock with aluminum bedding block and then fibreglass bedded it, Timney trigger, handloads and I got it shooting pretty darn good. Startedhunting with it and can't stand that the bolt will open when on "safe"!!

I always installed Timney triggers in my Remington bolts (7s & 700s).

Jerry what options have you got? Or know off?

All my options do not require action mods and thus will not lock the bolt when safety is engaged.

If you want options where the action needs to be modified, start by finding a gunsmith that will work with you on the mods, then look for parts that you might have access to.

If I need to lock the bolt in place, I will use another receiver.
