Remington VERSA MAX Tactical

We have tested the other version of this shotgun. The R12 model. I still prefer the M4 or better yet nothing beats the AA12 with a drum for fun :D

I havent tried the R12 but if its within a few hudred of an M4, Id take the Benelli. It just looks better to me.

But this 22" Tactical model is a very versatile gun imo. At 1200-1300$ its a great value and in my opinion a way better purchase than an M2 for example.

Damn I keep thinking up questions and forgetting to ask them all... Can you ghost load with the VMT? Any problems ghosting with 3.5" shells? Sorry if that makes you have to go out and buy more ammo....

Secondly, does this gas system dry out the internals like an AR-15? Or is it 2 pistons (just by judging from the internal pictures)? I can't quite tell... Does it need to be greased quite a bit?

2 pistons, same system as M4. Works best with minimal lube and stays quite clean.

Cant answer the 3.5" ghost load question but from what Ive seen works fine with 3"

If anyone hears back from Rem, let us know why they don't mark and/or market it as a 3.5". I want to think that there is a good reason, but can't think of any since the chamber checks out.

Sweet gun for sure. It's a little heavy, but has got a really nice balance to it.
And, I've heard tell of a man hitting 2 clays with 1 shot with this gun. He's short and ugly, but rumour has it that he can shoot...

If I hadn't fallen in love with an Italian, I'd be ogling VersaMax pics instead of Vinci's...

That guy sounds like a superhero!!! 2 clays 1 shot cmon!

I think the reasoning is the unrestricted mag tube. One reviewer said that if you top it up with 3.5" the long shells supposedly kink from the pressure of the spring and recoil or something. So basically dont load more than 3 in the mag and you're good to go!

How many 2-3/4 does it take in the mag tube? Mine unfortunately only fits about 4.5 of them. I took the thing apart and the Nordic extension is all for show, as I figured. I'm gonna have a closer look at it one of these days to figure out how to unblock the extension and get that 5th round happening... but it will definitely require a new spring and blocker for the tube.

Four 2 3/4" rounds are all that I can fit in the magazine... When I broke the gun down prior to shooting it I did notice that there is a plug glued into the mag extension. After taking it to the range and beating it up at little (I think I fired close to 100 rounds of various brands, shot type and shot length), I noticed, while cleaning it afterward, that there was something rattling around inside the mag extension forward of the glued in plug. Weird... Regarding shooting 3 1/2", I do know of others who have inquired with Remington about the Versa Max Tactical and were told that there are no issues. I have fired off an email to Remington myself to verify but have yet to hear back.

Hi Guys - just bought me one of these babys yesterday thinking that it might be a good 3-gun gun.

First thing I noticed was the mag clamp is setup on the wrong side for a right handed person. Reversed that and installed the red fiber optic front sight as I prefer that over the green. Also took the picatinney rail off the receiver as I also prefer not to have optics on shotguns.

Now for the important stuff. Did either one of you work out how to modify the mag extension to allow 5 rounds? Again I am NOT suggesting contravening Canadian law - but I think having the full legal capacity for use in competition would be quite helpful - even if it is just 1 more round...

I am also wondering why Remington would not do this right from the factory to make these guns Canadian compliant...

I suspect they took the easy route by basically just plugging the Nordic extension right at the base and leaving the mag tube in the same configuration as the other (non-tactical) version of the gun, which I would guess are 2+1 or 3+1 in 3.5".

I haven't attempted to un-#### mine. It will require a new spring at the very least.

I just ordered one today.for the guys who are wondering where to find them.Wolverine Supply had four left this afternoon.Selling for $1295.00.I hope somebody looks into the tube stop by the time it arrives or Ill let ya know what changes I make.

Basically the mag extension is phony or at best for looks only. Much the same as the Bennelli M4.

knock-knock covered it above when he stated that the mag is set up as it would be for a stock Versa max (4 rounds)

Also like knock-knock I have decided to leave it alone.

I don't want any questions from the boys in blue...

The Versa Max arrived today.Took it to the range and gave it a test.I will say I think its a great gun.Ran some 2 3/4 slugs and #4 and #8 shot through it.Very smooth and cycled well.Slugs shot accurate at fifty and the shot held well with the breach choke.Havent shot patterns with it improved choke yet.I dont mind the rail as the groove seems to work well with me and the stud being set up on the wrong side ...well us southpaw guys got to get a break now and then. All in all I would recomend it to andbody that want to dish out the coin for a semmi tactical

I just haven't had the time to attack it... Im not worried about 'questions' or anything like that. When I feel motivated I'll definitely tear it apart and figure out how to get 5 3" shells in there. I just wish the bloody thing was labeled properly as a 3.5" gun!!

So, my question is, and sorry to drag this thread up, but, why not just buy the Versamax sportsmen now, which is marked/chambered for 3.5", for the $999 it's going for, and just get the barrel cut down, and add an extension to allow for 5.5 3.5" shells?

Should work out to about $100 less than the versamax tactical, and, we're looking at 7+1+1 2.75" right?

The Tactical model comes with a removable receiver mounted rail, a front barrel clamp with small rail and swivel mount, glow front sight, adjustable comb inserts, oversize release button and safety, as well as the nordic extension you mentioned, and a muzzle brake/breacher thing. Oh yeah and oversize charging handle too.

It would cost considerably more than the Tactical sticker price to get a Sportsman up to those 'specs' but the added advantage of having 3.5" MARKED barrel/receiver may be worth it to some.

True. I just figured 9 rounds made up for the lack of mall ninja toys. I guess if you want all that, you might choose to go about it differently. I'd say hands down the first step is to get a 3.5" gun and go from there. No rails necessary for three gun/turkey hunting.
