Remington VTR 223 AI

I just got my 223 VTR back from Dennis "Guntech" Sorensen. Looks very good without the brake and is now accurize, tuned and rechambered to 223 AI.
Mounted scope this morning and it boresighted without any adjustment, don't you just love it when the action is true!!

The other one is a 22-250AI.

The 22-250AI is the HS stocked SS 700, it is pretty quick, that is a Gaillard 12 twist barrel. It loves 50 grn Nosler BT's. Guntech wasn't impressed with that remy barrel on the VTR, figured it should be a forming barrel.

So, I bought a box of 500 American Seagull 55 grn FMJ to make brass. I'd love to have gotten at least some PrivI Partisan brass or better still Lapua brass to form instead, but the Seagull brass isn't all that bad. I want that barrel to last at least a few years, as I have two more projects.

A 338 Ultra built with a SS 338 takeoff barrel and a donor 300 ultra SPS. Nothing fancy, just a hard hitting light Elk slayer. Already got the donor and barrel.

The 243AI on a rem 700 with a SS 28" Lilja 3 grove 8 twist for 115 DTAC's in an adjustable B&C A5. Plus Badger btm metal and detachable mag. And way off in the distant future some NFX optics. Probably going to buy a SPS varmint or try to find a donor used, but that is slim picking.

To do this, I sacraficed my Sako 75 SS/Syn 7mm rem today...... So now I have no normal rifles.

I just sold my Sako, still waiting for the EMT and then ordering the parts for the 243 AI. It isn't built yet, I just know how I want it spec'd. What I can get for a donor will determine how fast I get to add the cool stuff. If I can find a SA 700 for $4-500 I'd be finished alot sooner than if I have to part out a new SPS or use that barrel to form with.

Two questions for you Mystic :

Will a 8 twist slow down the velocities terribly and could I get away with less twist and still use the 115 DTAC's??

I don't think you will notice any substantial drop in velocity, and you will need at least an 8 twist for a 115 gr 6mm bullet. That's a very long bullet. - dan

Max accurate velocity is a blend of what the barrel and bullet like together. There can be a pretty wide range from gun to gun. No biggie, just the way things work out.

I am thinking 7 twist for these bad boys. 8 twist as a min.

Speed doesn't stabilize as much as I once thought - damn these aerospace engineers and their stability programs

I would check with the bullet makers specs and go with it. 2700 to 3100fps at the adequate twist will still lead to excellent performance.
