I purchased a Firefield M4 Carbine Quad rail for my VTR and it doesn't come with a new barrel nut. Do I need a proper AR-15 barrel nut to make this work, or do I install the two piece rail over the existing nut? I have read the posts to install it and they say the quad rails work, but most kits come with the proper nut, it seems. I haven't pull apart the gun yet, just doing my homework first.

Quick question: Did you get a free float quad rail or drop-in? Drop in rails use an ARs existing delta ring and handguard cap so the existing barrel nut is retained. Free float rail either come with their own proprietary barrel nut or clamp onto the original depending on their design.

I believe its a free float, (it doesn‘t taper down) the rail is 6.7 inches & splits in two pieces with four hex bolts that sandwich it together. I was told at the store that it just clamps on, but just making sure.
