Posting this for a co-worker. He is interested in the Remington XR-100 in .223.

This would be his first rifle and he intends it primarily for target shooting.

He isn't sure about the stock but he said he likes the idea of the thumbhole because it would create a grip closer to a pistol grip as he is used to the C7.

Anyone out here using one or have experience with it? Thanks

There are a few people on this site with them. I have one in .204. Unfortunately mine was a lemon. That being said a lot of others have had great results from these as stock rifles, and some use them for a base to make builds.

I shot an XR-100 in 22-250 that was very accurate completely stock. Like anything they are factory rifles. Some are excellent some aren't.

They are wonderful rifles, but overpriced for what they are. They are now discontinued and have been replaced with the VLS, which is a better system because it uses a 700 action. The XR uses an action based on the XP 100 and getting accessories can be difficult.

I have used them - and they are extremely popular - for building precision rifles. The short, single-shot action is stiff and well-made.

For that sort of money, would go with a Savage LRPV. Way better out of the box in my opinion. Ask CyaN1de, he has both.

Yup.... 2 XR-100's and a Savage LRPV.

1 XR has been trued and is now one of my target rifles chambered in 6BR. The other is still in 22-250 as it came but will soon be turned into a 6BR as well.

In it's current stock state I have smacked gopher's with it out to 435yds as measured with a rangefinder.

My Savage LRPV is still stock and chambered in .223. Quite accurate but I would prefer one with the 6oz Target Trigger instead of the 1.5lb it has now.

I prefer the thumbhole stock of the XR over the Savage myself, but that is a personal thing.

They are both capable of 5 shot 1 holers at 100M out of the box with handloads.

Buy a 700 SPS with the heavy barrel then get a Boyd's stock as it is the same as the XP100, put them together and you get a better rifle as it is a 700 and a repeater and save $$$ in the process! I did it and it worked a treat.

For a bench gun/super accurate varminter, many prefer the single shot over a mag fed rifle. There are advantages and some very obvious disadvantages.

The stock on the XR-100 is excellent. I really like it. Thumbholes are very nice to shoot.

The XR 100 shoot vey well, but like other members have said they shoot 1 small hole with reloads at 100 y , but that becomes borring and you will want to shoot farther like most members do at range I go to. and at 300y they shoot well also, but are very hard to group well if there is any wind. and they really don't work at the longer distances like F class shooting. as they have a 1/12 twist get yourself a 1/9 or 1/8 twist or even better a 1/7 to shoot the 75gr and up bullets that really shine at long distances.

My buddy has one with a custom barrell on it now, its the most accurate .223 i've seen. Was great as factory and smoking now, another buddy had a .223 left stock and it was also fantastic.
Mine started out life as a .204 but is now a 6 BR, still love it.

I believe they've quit making them now.
This is an older pic of mine, it now has a N/F one piece 20min. base/ring set and a 12x42x56 NXS on top with a Kelbly trigger (4oz)
