Anyone out there have experience with the Remington Model Seven in .223 cal. or .243 ? I am lookng for a 100 yd varmint rifle and cal. to feed a few coyotes in my backyard. I have lots of military stuff but need something a bit more dedicated to the immediate problem and seem to have narrowed my search down to the above.

You said "dedicated".

For a dedicated 'yote whacker, I'd look first to a 700 VTR in 22-250, or 223 as a second choice. The two I've played with will shoot the cents off a nickel at 100 and give you change back !

I'm not sure what kind of distances you get with a .223, but that .243 will take yotes out at 800 yds accurately. My GF destroys Folgers coffee cans filled with sand out at 761 yds (across the lake at the moose camp) and rarely misses a shot. She does this with a stock Rem 700 SPS Varmint and Rem Premier Varmint 75 gr V-Max Boat Tails, laying prone with a Harris bi-pod. Of course the glass is a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56 Mil-dot, which helps.:sniper:

Thanks guys. That helps. I am very familiar with the .223 and .243 cartridges and reload both (don 't know the 22-250 but will rectify that) but don't own a good modern BA. Looking at Rem. 7 and Ruger 77 so far. Much obliged for the feedback.

A M-7 is a joy to carry, and the .243 is just a little more versatile than the .22's. A 55 gr BT at 3800 fps from the short barrel will flatten any coyote that you can hit.

Don't over burden it with a big scope, especially if you expect your shots to be close. A 2.5-8X Leupold would be excellent on this little rifle.

Consider a Remington SPS Varmint. For varminting, you will be shooting enough ammo to get your barrel pretty damned hot, and having a bull barrel will resist heat much better. Furthermore, if only a 100 yard rifle, consider the 204 Ruger caliber. It is the fastest commecial cartridge going, and is deadly on coyotes past 400 yards.

243 will eat barrels and your accurate barrel life will be gone after about 1000 rounds. 223 is not a bad choice either, but i am a 204/SPS Varmint fan all the way.

Model Seven is a fantastic little rifle. I have one in .308 and the more I carry it the more I love it.

go for .243, if its for the odd coyote you'll never have to worry about shooting the volume needed to ruin a barrel. it shoots flat, hits hard, and you can always drop in some 100gr loadings for the odd deer hunt.

that being said, the .223 will kill just as well, and benifits from lower recoil, cheaper ammo, and a quieter report.

My new Mod.7 223 just arrived and I think it will be ideal for a walking around rifle. Should weigh in at a tad over 7 lbs. scoped.
They are starting to get quite scarce on the dealer's racks, my local gun shop could not get one at all, so if you make that your choice maybe start looking soon....

I've owned a Remington Model 7 in both calibers, an older blued .223 with an 18.5" barrel and a stainless synthetic .243 with a 20" barrel. The .223 was a very handy, compact rifle and I liked it a great deal. The stainless wasn't as good a rifle but I liked the .243 caliber a little better than the .223 for larger animals like coyotes.

For distances within 100 yards either cartridge will do. The .223 is more plentiful and cheaper while the .243 is more versatile.

Coincidental to this little thread I was just asked to tune up a Model 7 in 6mm (I get several such requests this time of year, deer season in the East) and what a nice little rifle. This one had a crappy Tasco on top but once cleaned and set up the holes were touching each other at 100 yds. If the M7 will do that in .223 I believe that is where I am headed.

Thanks again everyone.

Has anybody tried a 260 remington with 85 gr for dog hunting. Given a thought and reloaded a few but have not shot them/tested them yet. Since I have a remington ti I thought this could be a good walking gun for them.

I just got in a Model Seven CDL in .223 but haven't had a chance to shoot it. I'm thinking its going to be a perfect walkin' around rifle for deer or coyotes. I'm topping it with a Leupold 2x7 LR in Talley LWs. I like this rifle and would like to have one the same in .250 Savage.

It's shown next to a 788 in .223 as well.
