Remington??

700s from about 2009 up appear to have taken a bit of a quality hit. I bought one from this era that had a defective trigger (took them 6 months to repair under warranty, god knows why it takes that long to swap a trigger group, should have put in a Timney). That being said I used to be the guy that would send guns away for repair work at a large gun store. We didn't send all that many 700s away for work so they are still a pretty safe bet. The pumps and auto loaders are the same story, that is: better quality in years gone past, but still a workable firearm.

I think the bad reputation they have earned lately is because of what they did to Marlin when they moved the factory in late 2009.

I'd still buy a 700 if I wanted to do a build off of the action. If I wanted to hunt with a out of the box rifle, I'd look elsewhere since there are so many great out of the box rifles on the market.

Just my 2 cents.

I have trued old 700 actions and new 700 actions. Some older ones were as wonky as some newer ones... my point is they all vary, new and old. Pick one that looks good is all you can do. They will all benefit with truing if you decide to install a custom barrel. But they all shoot pretty good as is. In the 60's and 70's 700's were setting the standards for factory accuracy and the 700 is still the strongest, safest 2 lug bolt action ever made.

I have a 22-250 700bdl bought used in early 90's for $250. I really like it. I did change the hinge floor plate to the new detatchable mag last year.
I also bought a new 700 in .243 last year. It shoots nice groups too, but the look and feel is cheap. For a $500 rfle its OK.
I'm not married to rem 700's but I like the familiarity of both hunting rifles being the same.
I thought the TC Venture would have been nice........

My 2 cents

I've had newer ones and older ones and I liked them all - with preference to the olders ones only because of the finish. The newer ones I owned were SPS finish - which is what it is ... a little rougher and not as attractive or rust resistant I find. That said they do of course sell new models with nicer metal finishes.

Having said this my son bought a 700SPS Tactical a couple years ago. It doesnt get any better groups than my 700 hunting rifles. Maybe it needs some work?

700 Remingtons have remained a good choice.
There have been some complaints about recent ones, but
the 3 I have bought in the last 3 years are all just as good shooters as the early ones.

They are my platform of choice if building a custom.

I have a couple of factory 700s that are scary accurate.

Guntech summed it up pretty well.

My Aussie bought Rem700 SPS has been a dream, lovely action an no sharp burrs or faults of any sorts.. its also my most accurate rifle.

it was bout early 2009, my only gripe is the finish of the barrel an reciever, it is prone for surace rust if just left after use especially in summer when the body sweats but i oiled it up an wipe it down after use an a light spray now an then...

would be interested in dating the firearm actually, is there a serial# date code?

cheers

I had a 700 sps in .270 that liked to fire as the bolt was being cammed down. It was bought about 5 yrs ago and I had Remington try to "fix it" but it still happened on occasion. I would never buy one again and I'm not the only one this happened to. Remington knows about the problem and have been sued because others have been killed and injured because of this flaw. No we didn't have our fingers or anything near the trigger when it happened!!

Is that not because they wanted to save 25 cents or something ridiculous. The designer even submitted an updated design to prevent that. Now they run an x trigger group or something along those lines

the 700 is still the strongest, safest 2 lug bolt action ever made.

Guntech, I have read that the Howa 1500 is stronger than the 700 (from sources of unknown credibility), it sure looks more robust. What are your thoughts on this? In those Swedish torture test videos that did the rounds a couple of years ago the only 2 rifles that failed catastrophically were the browning A-Bolt and the Rem 700, granted the barrels let go, not the actions. The Howa 1500 rated the highest by their criteria, the Rem 700 the lowest. They tested the aforementioned 3 as well as Sako 85, T3, Mannlicher, Blaser 93 and Zoli 1900.

IIRC they were all 30-06 and had a 180gr bullet jammed 4" ahead of the chamber and were then fired.
Its a sample of one, I know, but still interesting none the less. One can't argue with the 700's track record from a practical viewpoint.
