Reminton 700 SPS Tactical...opinions?

^ not quite the same rifle... It's a heavy barrel remington 700 in a hogue overmolded stock.

Yes, that rifle is in the $2000 range...the one I'm talking about is about $700 or so.

i have a sps tac in 223, with handloads it will shoot under .5moa 3 round groups, my best 5 round group is .6moa, only thing i dislike about it, is the stock

You don't like the stock, huh? I have tried them and thought they were OK. What have you found with it?

I like mine in 223, it has a HS stock on it though.

have both .223 and .308

chenged stocks to HS Pres (VS model)

.223 is sub-MOA, but .308 is still unfired ))

Jeff, Its only about $20 more than the cheapest SPS. It will be a great platform to learn on and upgrade.
If you read through the other linked thread, and wade through some of the arguing you will find that for the most part the SPS is the best bang for the buck from remington, You will likely find that once you get hooked, and burn that barrel out all you will want it for is the action.
Heck, even if you sell that stock and upgrade from the EE, you will still likely spend less coin than a similar factory offering.

I have one in .308 and it is a great starter rifle (I believe). I was fairly new to shooting when I got it so didn't notice the stock so much. If you're already a fairly decent shot then I'd say spend alittle more and get something like the 700P or 5R Milspec...or get the SPS and change the stock (as others have said). Anyway you slice it the gun is a solid shooter...

I like the fact that it has a 20" barrel, like the Savage 10FP's of days gone by. I am going to try to find one...thanks for all the helpful comments.

I have one in 223. They are getting somewhat difficult to get. I've had a few people try and buy mine. Good rifle. Shoots nice.

The SPS tactical have a 1:12 twist (.308) I heard that it's not the optimal twist for heavy bullets, is that true or just bull####??? The Savage 10FP, 10FCP-K, etc... comes with a 1:10 twist.

I only shoot 168gr HPBT the highest is 170 with a 1:12 twist. 168gr is good until 600 yards so far......need a longer range

Lots of guys shooting 175gr. Sierras with 1/12" barrels. Buy it and shoot it. It won't be an issue .
