Reminton 700 SPS Tactical...opinions?

The SPS tactical have a 1:12 twist (.308) I heard that it's not the optimal twist for heavy bullets, is that true or just bulls**t??? The Savage 10FP, 10FCP-K, etc... comes with a 1:10 twist.

:bsFlag:

10 inch twists are WAYYYYYYYYYY more than you need for a 308. a 1:12 twist will stabilize any bullet you can stand to fire out of a .308 winchester cartridge. 14" twists will stabilize any 156 grain palma bullet going and they are LONG (It aint about the weight, it's the length!)

If you were building a 300 RUM and wanting to shoot 240 Sierra's YES, get a 10 inch twist

There are down-sides to over spinning bullets. This fascination with 10" twists in 308's baffles me.

I just got one in 223. Only fired 3 rounds through it so far but I think it's gonna be a keeper. I replaced the Hogue with a VSF

first 2 shots landed half inch apart, made scope adjustment and my first 3 shot group was 3/4"....and this was with 50gr varmint bullets which Im sure arent ideal in the faster 9 twist brl

The twist rate is absolutely fine. A 1:9" is arguably one of the most flexible of all .224 cal. offerings. It'll handle anything from 35gr.-70gr. bullets.

With only (3) rounds down the tube, you're hardly in a position to draw any conclusions.

Nice looking piece though. I was curious as to how a VSF desert stock would look with a shorter length barrel. Any plans on paining the barrelled action coyote brown or dark earth?

I agree that with most guys sticking with 175 gr or less the 12 twist is perfect.
There are some of us who shoot 200 plus gr bullets out their 308s with grest results and the 10 twist works better.
Will the average shooter be effcted ? No but for those of us who really push the envelope it can.

As for the SPS Tac or Varmit rifles, they are great platforms just waiting for a decent stock.

Had mine for a bit, .308 and Love it! sub MOA 4 shot groups with factory 150gr. (always seem to toss one flyer out of the 5 though:() can't wait for my press to show up and get some handloads through it.

pumped 45 rounds through it on Tuesday, most @ 460 yards. One group I did measure @ 240 yards was 4/5 in 2". 330 yard group around 5" for 5 shots. It was a bit breezy and the 50 grainers get pushed around easily.

I dont think Im gonna paint the metal. :) here's a better pic

My 5R is 11.5 twist and loves the 180gr 's, I am sure that guys who shoot 200grs would the 1:10 is not bulls**t

I have the 223 and love it! that is now that i removed that POS hogue stock and put on a bell & carlson light tactical stock (same one off the rem xcr tactical guns) on it. now it shoots like a dream! great little gun, and love the short barrel!

No problem with heavy bullets?

Yeah, I've got a .223 SPS Tactical that I had bedded into a 700P HS take-off stock. Looks a bit odd with the short barrel sticking out of a relatively long fore-end, but handles great and loves 69g SMKs. Haven't tried anything else in it since it shoots these into 0.5MOA all day long. Has a 6-18 Leupold Mark 2 on it, which BTW is a great scope for this rifle.
