Reminton 700 vs Browning X-Bolt? Help me decide!

rem 700 pretty good, x-bolt 60 degree lift a plus, whoever said 770 should try something else, tikka dynamite outta box!

I have a Browning X-Bolt Varmint Stalker, .308, and it's a god damn tack driver. The Duratouch stock is awesome, the feel of it alone is far and away better than any other plastic 700 rifle I've handled. 60' bolt, 3 lugs, good trigger etc etc... I'd take a Browning hands down almost every time over a 700. A side by side comparison would reveal just how much the fit and finish of a Browning is ahead of Remington. Personally, a big selling point for me on an X-Bolt over a 700 would be the detachable mag. A floorplate on any rifle just makes me wonder 'why...?'.

700 all the way. Not even close. You can even get them with detachable mags.

Why a floorplate???
Makes for easy unloading compared to a blind mag. And its actually a way better option then the old Browning floorplate/ detach mag waste of time.
You can't lose a floorplate.

I will say that the x-bolt detachable magazine system makes the old A-bolt look even worse than it actually was.

That being said, a detachable magazine is definitely not a necessary option on my rifles....I actually prefer a floorplate.

One of my buddies had an x-bolt in 243....it was very accurate, but he, like myself, prefers the 700.

60Âş Bolt lift means squat in my world. Never lost a game animal due to that extra 30Âş of lift, lol.
Sensible scope mounting and good scope choices make the bolt handle clearance problems a non-issue.

But, in the final analysis, you are the one using the rifle, so you need to handle both, and make a decision based on which
you like best.

Both will serve the purpose intended.

Oh, and BTW, buy a 30-06. You will not regret that choice.
Regards, Dave.

Easy unloading? Nothing is as easy a poping out a mag. Plus it is safer since you can have it unloaded yet ready to go in a second. Like I said, just my personal preference.

30-06 is a great choice. BUt not for target shooting. ;)

Thanks Superbrad. Just curious as to why you are negative about magnum rounds? I have fired them.. more power and accuracy at longer distances, but overall I think would prefer the lower recoil and costs of the 308/30-06.

@cyclops Haha cheeky, although the X-Bolt I'm looking at is either the Hunter or Medallion, and the Remington 700 in the Custom Deluxe (CDL).

I am not negative against the magnum calibers... If you can shoot them well and recoil doesn't bother you and you don't mind spending more for your rounds then go for it if you feel you will get an advantage out of the trajectory... If I had a hunting scenario where I would get 300+ yard shots I would be taking a good long look at the 270 wsm .... but for my needs the 06 is just fine.... heck, I am even picking up a 270 single for my spot and stock hunting....

Right on. Thanks!

go with the X-bolt, hands down! An awesome rifle. You'll love it! My youngest son and & I both have new X-bolts. And they also have the Road Hunter's delight feature where as the Remington does not.:p

Cheers, I appreciate the feedback. Do you have any thoughts on .308 or 30-06 as this will be my ONE gun..

it's the 308 short action for me over the 30-06 every time. My only long actions are in Ruger No.1's. You will absolutely love an X-bolt in 308. I didn't catch what you will be hunting, but you may want to consider the 7mm-08. As someone mentioned "it's a hammer at 500 yards".;)

I've handled both but only owned 700's. I find the 60 deg lift rather stiff to bring up when cocking in comparison to others. Yeah, yeah I know, get some muscles and quit whining, but it's all in the small stuff for me. I can't stand the look of that magazine metal thing on the x-bolt stock either!

I have owned both the Browning X bolt Hunter model in .243 and Remington 700 in .270(the good models..Mtn. rifle and a BDL.) CDL is on my wish list.
The Browning was gone after one season of coyote hunting........I found the bolt throw to be poor(very sticky).
I still have the Remington 700 .
The only time I ever heard of anyone needing service on a 700 resulted in a very pleased and satisfied Remington customer .
My experiences only.........
