Reminton 710 or Savage 111FCXP3

That and with a second mag and a different load (and aim of point) a guy could go for White tail and Moose on the same trip.

Anything you'd shoot a whitetail with will kill a moose just fine, and vice versa. one load, one gun :D

We discussed the detachable mag and he wants to go for it. Less hassel when you do glass something and have to get out of the truck. That and with a second mag and a different load (and aim of point) a guy could go for White tail and Moose on the same trip.

I'm not a fan of detachable mags, I prefer a hinged floorplate, but whatever you like.

Keep your life simple and use one big game load in you rrifle. You shouldn't be thinking about where to hold 'for tyhis load' while pointing a gun at an animal.

I'd suggest the Remington stainless SPS in 30-06

if you really want a detachable magazine, there is the SPS DM, but it is not stainless

I much prefer the 30-06 to the 300 Win Mag for anything inside 400 yards.

Stainless is not a big issue to myself. I told the kid that I would go half on a rifle and optics for just "his" rifle. He figures that with everything else that is tapping into his funds. That He should have about $300 socked away by Spring. I tried to get him into black powder hunting like myself. But thats way too "old school" for him at this time.

Savage; Stevens or Rem 700 SPS...

Forget the Rem 710... it's already been covered here for what it is... POS... :(

That leaves the Savage... not a bad deal. Good rifle for the money. Or you can get the econo version... the Stevens 200... and that's been covered on here already... great little rifle for the money. :)

Of course, since the Rem 700 SPS has also been mentioned... I will say that's how I'd go. Probably spend the extra $$ and get the stainless version. For me, probably in 7mm-08... :D

On a different note, I bought my son a Winchester Super Shadow (270WSM) last year, it is controlled poush feed, with a blind mag. ( I believe The Shootist in St Albert was selling them for $579)

No regrets at all, it has turned out to be a super rifle for a young fella and at a great price. Not exactly what you are looking for, but worth taking a look at.

I believer all new Savages have the Accu-Trigger?? also they would take different scope bases, as the new AT Savages have a flat top receiver IIRC

the savage package deals are a detachable mag and there is no comparison to the rem 710. do yourself a favour and get the savage and replace the scope and you wont have any complaints

+1 savage stevens 200.... in 30-06. U cant go wrong.... I wouldnt get the savage with scope, cause you can buy the stevens 200 without and mount a better scope onto the stevens...

just my .22 cents

BTW i got 2 stevens one in 30-06 and 7mm mag. both are great!!!

also if you are not a huge fan of synthetic stocks, or if you are into cutom rifles you can checkout boyds for a custom stock in the future...(look under savage)

I got the savage in 300mag and love it. Its a great shooting gun for whatever you're hunting.

I got it as my first hunting rifle last spring and so far have taken 2 deer and a black bear with no problems. But the longest shot of the 3 was 25 yards, lol.
I found it shoots the 180 winchester ballistic silver tips the best. 1 inch group at 100M.

I will be using this gun for a very long time.

Buy it you'll be happy. It may not be the prettiest gun but it does what it needs to.

Pat.

270 WSM, what does that run a box?

Ammuntion is about $5-6 more a box then 270 ammo but if u reload cost is not really a factor. Not a big deal considering how much I spend on coffee per day in stuiped vending machines and TH
