Reminton Yellowjacket ammo

I use them pretty much exclusively in the gopher patch. My gun shoots them much more accurately than Ron AKA's.

I use Yellow Jackets in my Mossberg 144LS for groundhogs. No, they are not the most accurate however within 50 yds, I can place the shot where it needs to go and it does the trick. While looking for the right ammo I learned that those dirt pigs are tough animals and for me the Yellow Jackets worked the best and keep most of them from getting back down their hole.

Yellow Jackets in my gun, in my situation are my rimfire of choice.

I put 10 rounds of Eley target on my VTR 597 and shoot them as fast as i can. No FTF or FTE. I put 10 yellowjackets on the same gun, 2 FTE.
+2 cents.

I have quite a few rimfires, one of them being a Pietta PPS-50. The yellow jacket ammo is the only one I found that operates consistently without jamming up on me.

i made no claim that yellow jackets were/are better than premium target ammo, just different rifles will have a different preference for ammo, which is widely accepted. yellow jackets could have just as easily placed mid pack, and you wouldn't bat an eye at it. i'm sure their rim thickness and weight is as consistent and many others in your chart, and their price is above many others, so how do you explain the poor finish. how could that be? premuim price doesn't always carry premium results. :nest: you've clearly put alot of work into your results, and your chart, but it's not universal. sorry.

do you shoot gophers and tin cans with lapua midas M because it's the most accurate?

In general the higher the velocity of rimfire the worse it shoots. That is why all accurate target ammo is subsonic. If you look at my chart you will see that the only HV ammo that broke into the ranks of subsonic was the Lapua HP. It is very expensive, and may have had a little luck, as it only shot slightly better than the poorest subsonic. The other issue with the Yellow Jacket is that it is a 33 grain bullet, and shorter than the standard 40 grain. I suspect short bullets may cant in the barrel easier. Also the BC is poorer. In comparison the CCI Velocitor has a 40 grain bullet, and lower velocity. It shot better.

No I don't use Midas M for gophers and tin cans. As you may be aware it is not cheap. However I have used Eley Target Rifle with great success on gophers. Shot one brick and by far had the highest percentage of hits -- probably in the 75-80% range. But, due purely to cost I shoot Winchester Dynapoints. Bought a case at Walmart for $18 a brick. Accuracy not so great, but cost excellent, and wind drift pretty good.

In gopher hunting reading and adjusting for wind drift is a big factor. Using a UV bullet like a Yellow Jacket makes it much more difficult, because they drift more in the wind. Wind drift in a 10 mph wind for an Eley target round is 3.7" at 100 yards. A Winchester Dynapoint is almost as good, at 4.1", while the Yellow Jacket is 6.7", almost double the target ammo.

More "data" for the pile.

My 10/22 wouldn't feed them with an aftermarket magazine with plastic lips, the factory 10 rounds mags fed them fine. I remember really hearing them "spank" into ground hogs when you hit them but that was back when I was 18 and would stalk them to about 25-35 yards. Nowadays I demand something a little more accurate.

wow ... this is great info ... thanks for posting

I tested 27 different kinds of ammo in my Savage BTVS. The Remington Yellow Jackets placed 26th out of 27 for accuracy, just nudged out for basement position by the Remington Viper. See table below. CCI Velocitor was the most accurate of the Ultra Velocity stuff, and not too bad for non target ammo.

I was never able to get the accuracy I wanted from the Yellow jacket, it did hit harder under 50 yards and was ok in a "spray and pray" but for gophers I use AE 40 solids. I find the AE 40gr shot in my cz452 almost as good as Laupa. If I was shoot 50 yards 10 shot groups and only taking the best 8 out of ten they shoot as well as any. The higher end target rounds just don't have the fliers and yes probably a little better all around.. Also I find that when I change amo it can take 30 rounds for the gun to settle into the new rounds. If I shoot fed gold match right after I have been shooting Eley or Lapua it will shoot really well for about 20 rounds and then it goes away and does not come back. When I change back to Lapua it will tall over 30 rounds before it gets back to its best, after a cleaning it can take 50 rounds for my gun to get shooting up to its potential.
We shoot gophers out to 200 yards with our 22s and the yellow jacket is just not even close at that range, then again nor are most spray and prays. Have had some great 1000 rounds days shooting gophers so having a gun that likes the cheaper ammunition is a good thing
