Hello, I just picked up this 1895 blued guide gun and looks pretty tight and straight, very little rattle when action open and very nice and tight when closed. Front sight seems exactly at 12 o'clock (although it needs to be pushed to the left a bit with a punch. Not terribly smooth but as I cycled several snap caps, it seems to loosen up more and more. I know it's a Remlin, but I wanted to know when it was manufactured, the old Marlin rule for serials doesn't apply to Remlins so I am curious if anyone knows the new rule, if there is one. The serial begins with MR74***D. I did a google search but I have not been able to find out much.
Thanks!

For Remlin guns the 2 letter code on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver indicates the date of manufacture.
The first letter is the month using B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X as the code. B=Jan. L=Feb. A=Mar. ETC.

The second letter is the year E=2010 F=2011 G=2012 H=2013
Using this code, my SBL (code PH) was made in June. 2013

Also what does it say on the left side re where is was made. My SBL says MARLIN FIREARMS CO NORTH HAVEN CT USA

The right side says REP indicating barrel made by Remington.

Great info there.
Unfortunately I cannot make out what's there on the left side. Looks like 3 parallel lines but quite faint. First line could be L, the other two lines could stand for H although there is no discernible horizontal line joining the two vertical lines but my best guess would be LH which would mean February 2013. The first letter of the code which would be the month doesn't have anything with parallel lines so the parallel lines most likely are part of the second letter which might be "H". Thanks again, this is very helpful.

BTW, when was the Remlin plant retooled and tightened up? If my 1895 guide gun was made in Feb 2013, is it after or before the retooling?

I have a 1895 that marked JM on the left side of the barrel in front of receiver ?, it a 450 marlin how do I date this one?

Yours is pre-Rem. The year is dated off the first 2 digits of Serial #. 02= 1998, 01=1999, 00= 2000, 99= 2001, 98=2002, etc.... Last Pre rem's were 91= 2009. Month of mfg is not available.

The guns went downhill in the remaining months of the New Haven plant (2009). The worst of the guns were produced when all the tooling equipment was moved to the Remington plant. Parts made in the old plant were mixed with new Remington made parts, Labourers unfamiliar with the products performed the Assembly. Remington then bought a bunch of new mfg equipment and has since (3rd quarter of 2012) put out a more consistent product, and is re introducing some of the previously suspended models.
