Because Remington had a better marketing team than Mossberg, I think these guns are aproximately equal with the Remington being slightly lower.
Apparently I am one of the only ones to have owned both.
The 870 receiver is made of steel. The 500 is not.
The 870 is made by Remington. They have/had a better reputation than Mossberg.
The 870 is more stiff and tight. The 500 seems a little loose to people.
The 870 costs more. The 500 costs less.
The 870 looks better in my opinion. But they are both very similar.
The 870 wood stocks that I have seen have a different stain that may appeal to more people.
There are more mods available for the 870.
That being said. There's a reason why I sold my 870 and still have multiple 500's.

870's have a cross bolt safety, 500/590 use a tang safety
870 have the action release button infront of the trigger guard,500/590 have it behind the trigger guard ( easier to get to)
590 has a higher standard mag capacity than the other two
590 has a bayonette lug, where the 870 its an aftermarket piece
870 has a protective plate under the action which makes it harder to remove shells using the shell stop bar
590 ( most of them) come with a heat shield, 870's do not
* the most reliable shotgun is going to be the one you feel most comfortable with, familiarize yourself with and the one you maintain.

Both the 870 and the 500 have the famed "dual action bars".
Pardon my ignorance (hey, asking is the only way I'll ever learn), but why is the 870 (seemingly) more revered for reliability?

Dual action bars...WOW....who gives a f*ck...name me one shotgun that DOESN'T have dual action bars.
DUEL EJECTOR...that's were the money is...Mossberg has dual ejectors making more reliable I think...acouple of times with my 870 the shell just popped out into the ejectio port causing a jam.
Both are top-of-the-line.

And it's dual extracters,not ejectors, it helps make sure you don't have a round stuck in the chamber if one extractor jumps the rim.
and then there's Mil spec 3343E test,that only the mossberg passed, that's 3000rds of full power buckshot with no failures.

well, i've never owned an 870, but i've handled quite a few. they feel much more solid. however, i like my Mossy Maverick 88 for versatility. the thing i've noticed with the Mossbergs is that the foregrip tends to rock a little, and if it rocks too much to one side, it won't cycle. never really seen that with a Remmy.
