I just got a weatherby vanguard RC. Now I want to get a remmington 5r. The 308. is a lot more economical to shoot, less recoil, accurate. Is it worth putting the extra money into the 5r?
Help me gun nutz,

If you're looking for "cool" factor and are willing to spend the extra for it then yes it's worth it. You're not taking your money with you and you may as well enjoy it while you're able to. If it's worth it to you and makes you happy, then yes get a 5R.

Otherwise if you're asking if you'll get extra performance out of the 5R then really the answer is it's dependent on the shooter. Check out what Clayne_b is able to do with his SPS varmit .308, which upgrades include a aftermarket chassis and Timney trigger and all the rest is bone stock.

Put the time into load dev, proper form, and spend a bit extra into good glass and you'll be happy with whatever you get behind.

Oh yeah, and welcome to CGN. :D

In all honesty, I think this will probably end up being a project gun. So the fact it come with a HS stock, and the x mark pro, doesn't really do much for me because I know I will probably replace it eventually anyway. However, the 5r barrel is supposed to be an excellent barrel and the platform it comes in could be very effective until I start to build it up. "Cool" is definitely there, but that's not the only factor. I am a fairly experienced shooter and am capable of hitting targets at 500 yards, so really I wonder if this is a good step towards a long range gun I could work with for a long time.
Also, thank you for the welcome. It is good to have a community to share my interests with.

I've had a 5R for a few years now and can shoot sub 0.5 MOA groups with hand loads. I didn't even do any development for that particular load. I'm currently working up a load that will hopefully improve upon this. Also, the jeweled bolt is super smooth and if you like bling, the stainless steel is nice.

A couple of years ago I was doing the SPS vs 5R flip flop. Went with the 5R and never looked back. I love it. For sh#ts and giggles, I put a few boxes of the cheap S&B fmj through it (I know, sacraligous!!) and I was getting MOA and sub at 200yrs.... With match grade, it is an absolute tack driver. About to take the plunge and start reloading. Can't wait to do some load development and see what I can squeeze out of this thing

Just buy the 5R and don't look back. You won't regret the initial investment. Plus a 24inch and 11.5 twist is a great combo for odd weighted bullets I hear.

Years ago when the R5 came on the market I bought one and it was a great rifle. I moved up in price to custom stuff etc and sold the R5 to a buddy who still uses and loves it. Well, only two weeks ago I bought another one as I plan to use a .308 for hunting and while the R5 is a tad heavy for this application I do like the rifle and so I treated myself. Anyway, on day one of load development this new R5 certainly wasn't embarrassed by my much more expensive toys and shows that you really don't have to spend a fortune to get a very, very good shooting rifle.

I have one and it shoots 1/2 MOA consistent with hand loads if I do my part. I've put a Timney trigger on it and a McMillan A5 stock as well. you cant go wrong for the money IMO

I have an older (mid-1990s) Remington Varmint with the HS Precision "spiderweb" stock. Not 5R btw. This was pre-SPS manufacture. One trend I do notice with these heavy barrel factory Remingtons, they do seem to prefer longer & heavier bullets loaded more outwards.

Want to tease yourself? Buy some of the Black Hills 175 grain match ammo & put them through your Remington.

Just got my 5R a few weeks ago and developing loads. One ragged hole at 100 and 2'' groups at 400 yards. Legitimate half moa with nothing more than a trigger tune.

Twice in the past while, non-handloading friends(that is, non-handloaders until they saw the light!!),
have let me play with their brand new bone stock 5R's.
Consistent 1/2moa, or less, was easy to get happening. 3/4" groups at 200 from bag/bipod/prone, in the field, was commonplace in still air.

... Horn. 155gr Amax, Varget, BR2's, Lapua brass, seated to mag length ... around 2.7/2.8"oal. 2800fps from 26 inch barrel.
Magic.

Steel soon gets to clanging regular & wayyy out there too, with this rifle and decent optics.

Plus, it feels so good to snuggle up to.

I've had 2 5R's...both were 1/2 MOA guns. I brought one to New Mexico where a buddy and I continuously rang the gong at 700 yards...( the best this range had). I'm an old shooter, but all my learned skills are less than what this type of rifle is capable of doing. Yes, you need good glass ( I opted for the Mk4 TMR )...so maybe save the money from a build and use it wisely, grasshopper...:)

I have no objections to our shooter brotherhood going way beyond my simple approach...but the 5R certainly works for me...good shooting to you...arctichunter

The 5R was one of the best rifle purchases I've made. 100 yards first attempts at 5 round groups were both sub .4 moa centre to centre. Sub .5 Moa gun. Groups shot two weeks apart. Also no issues with first shot ie it will be accurate. Sight in with 165 fusion. Took 3 rounds. Then 1 click up for 168 federal gold. Haven't bothered reloading for it at this time.

Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm rapidZ 1000 reticle. Two piece Leuopld base and rings. Shot sub .4 with stock trigger. Trigger was then lowered to 3lbs. Nicer but no more accurate.

Just make sure it's torqued down properly. But a firearm torque screwdriver.

I shot a buddies 5R and got .5 moa. Yes they hold sun 1" at 200 yards. Have one shotted a golf ball sized rock at 300 metres with my setup. I'm very fond of them. They make me look good and always put a smile on my face after shooting.

Love my 5r. Just completed the build about a week ago. Had to wait almost 2 months for my scope.

(not in the pic, since replace the plastic lens covers with Leopold Alum. covers, and a 2.5" sun shade)

Timney trigger.

I just bought a 5R off a fellow CGN.

Can't wait to get it out. A buddy I shoot with has one and it's very accurate for all stock. With hand loads and GMM it was 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups stock.

Timney 7 Tactical trigger. Adjustable from 2oz-8oz trigger pull. No safety. Not what you'd put on a hunting rifle but on a bench rifle, that would be sweet.
