Remmy 700 Question

I recently purchased a Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical .308 W/16.5" barrel. This is my first Remington but i noticed a couple things that are already annoying and wondering if this is typical to the rifle. First off the bolt will tighten right up after firing and difficult to reset on occasion. Secondly the bolt will pass over and not catch the rounds in the mag to be chambered so i have to fish them around to get them to catch (there seems to be alot of extra room in the mag) and this happens with any brand of ammo. any suggestions would help thanks.

The bolt 'tightening up' right after firing sounds like you mean it is hard to open? That may have to do with pressure. Whether this 'tightening up' is within normal ranges I can't say. Is your chamber and the ammo clean and dry? What does 'difficult to reset' a bolt mean?

Rounds in your magazine have to be loaded fully to the rear of the magazine. The magazine box may need an adjustment. It should be as wide as possible within the action.

I have two Remington 700 's one with the same feeding problem as you and one without. My 270 win xcr hunting rifle feeds great, and has been a reliable partner. My .223 xcr tlr wouldn't feed for love or money. No amount of fiddling could get it to work short of replacing the entire bottom metal with the one from Atlasworx. I installed it myself but it did need a lot of in letting and my job is visibly not pro.

They don't make Remington's like they used to. Understatement.

Yes. I mean it is hard to open. And by resetting the bolt i mean the action of chambering a new round it is stiff through the motion both retracting and moving the bolt forward. The ammo is clean and dry and the gun was newly cleaned. I use AE and Hornady Match but the same result on both but not predictable or no pattern to when it happens. I was inserting the ammo more central in the mag so will try your intel to move it to the rear. thank you

I've never experienced the stiff bolt lift, but as others have said that can be a pressure sing. My SPS tac did have a fairly stiff bolt new, but after a bit of use it loosened up. It's buttery smooth now. As for the feeding issues, i only had that issue with PRVI ammo, not with any other brands. Maybe try something else and see if it changes?

Had the same feeding issue when I first got my 700 and loading the rounds at the back of the mag helps resolve that. A little firmer force is require to lift open the bolt after firing because you are resetting/cocking the firing pin on the bolt but other than that, mine is fairly smooth.

"...Model 700 SPS..." That'd be an entry level low end rifle. If it's new, you do have a warrantee. Call Remington.
"...tighten right up after firing and difficult to reset..." You need to define/explain that better. Did you thoroughly clean the rifle?

Don't forget to lube the cocking ramp at the bottom rear of the bolt.
Also lube the locking lugs, particularly at the rear of each lug.
I use a light coat of STOS for this, and it improves bolt lift effort considerably.

I have a 16 inch as well, no problems with the bolt thus far (about 250 down the pipe). As for the internal box mag don't know. I changed my stock as soon as I got it, factory stock = garbage.
