Hi all,

I just bought a 783 Compact in .308 yesterday.

I haven't been to the range yet, and I was wondering what folks find wrong with the cheap Bushnell 3-9x40 scope (Brightness, Focus, Zero hold, etc.) that's included.

Thanks!

Steve

Cheap scopes are cheap for a reason & risky at best. They are poor performers overall.

Better to buy a good scope and worry not. A Leupold VX-2 2-7 would be perfect for your rifle.

Not sure I can splurge for a VX-2 2-7 right now (I wish!)..., but I'll keep my eyes open. Tks!

I suggest you buy the best scope you can. I've had two cheap scopes fail on me in the past and swore never again. A used Leupold won't cost a lot and will give good service with no problems.

Scope is not good, but will functional for a few shots anyway. I bought one in .223 and was going to make due for a while. However, I noticed the scope was slipping in the rings and decided to replace the scope while I was at it. The rings are total garbage if they cannot hold a scope with the recoil of a .223. The scope did not malfunction for me, but I only used it for about 50 shots.

I bought one in .243 around a year back and the scope it comes with was good enough for getting me through the break in process. Like others have mentioned, it gets pretty blurry on higher magnifications and the rings are absolute junk. I re-torqued the bases and replaced the rings and scope with Vortex hunter rings and a Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32. Vortex isn't the most popular brand on these forums but I own several of their scopes and rings, and am very happy with them. The rings can be found just about anywhere for $30 and Diamondback scopes pop up on the EE for $180 and up. If you're on a budget, take a look at Nikon as well.

Thanks for all the constructive feedback guys! I've decided to replace the included scope, and I've narrowed it down to Nikon and Vortex.

I'm sorry I'll be disappointing a lot of you guys,... but I finally had to settle for a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 (budget reasons...). Pretty good deal though (reg $260 for $199 and a $40 rebate).

I'll upgrade whenever possible.

No disappointment, they are an OK scope, not great but won't break at least. Tradex sells them for $149 regular price (out of stock at the moment) so when you see big markdowns shop around as one "great deal" may not be so great after all.

At the $200~ range, my go to scopes are the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40...good value.

That's true. Those new Redfield Revolutions are good scopes as well at a good price.

Yes, I had one on a 30-06 and it never let me down...... very solid construction..... stay away from the revenge line though....

Completely agree... have had Nikon pro staff on a couple of $1k plus rifles and they track great and hold zero.... they also have a great warranty I have never had to use.....
