Is ther anything thats removes a 2 part epoxy glue from scope and rings without damage? I have read a heat gun will do it or a solvent, but I am worried if I use a solvent it might hurt the scope finish or the bluing on the rings. Does anyone have any experience with this, They EAW rings and the epoxy is Uhu endfest 300.
Thank you
Elmer

Removing epoxy

Elmer,

Remove as much of the epoxy as you can with sharp knife. sandpaper etc. Don't get too close to the metal, you might scratch it.

Next wet the remaining epoxy with pure acetone. Wear gloves if you use a rag or use a small paint brush or a plumber's acid swab.

Keep the epoxy wet with the acetone and it will soften enough for you to scrub it away. If you let it dry it will harden up and you will have to start over.

Don't bother with nail polish remover, the acetone it diluted with water, scent etc. You can buy acetone at any hardware paint department. Canadian Tire sells a 500ml can that should do the job.

The acetone will not harm blued gun metal. However most scope have plastic trim rings etc which the acetone will dissolve if it touches them. And keep the acetone off of the glass, it may remove any optical coatings.

Beware of the fumes, acetone is commonly used by "sniffers" to get stoned. Keep it off the kitchen counter and use only metal or glass containers.

Elmer, I once bought a rifle that had crazy glue used to lock down the scope ring caps:eek: . So I found a 1-800 number for carzy glue, and their tech guy said to simply apply water on the screw heads. So using an eye dropper I applied water on the screw heads, and I put the rifle in an up-right position. I made sure the water puddled on top of each screw head. I left it that way over night. The next morning all the screws were lose. So crazy glue (and probaly all expoxies) is a ratio of chemicals with a water base. If you add enough water to the ratio, and give it time, those chemicals should break down, and the glue is no longer a bond. The main thing is to puddel the water on top of the screw heads.

My 2 cents:rockOn:

I use a mixture of 50/50 bandaid remover liquid and gasoline.
Doesn't hurt the finish but isn't instantaneous either. Soak a cloth with the mixture and apply over the effected area for a couple of hours at a time, remove and wipe gently with a clean cloth. Might actually take several repeats depending on how thick the deposit is, but it will eventually soften the epoxy enough to remove it without damage to the metal parts. If you do decide to sand oscrape the epoxy first, be extremely careful, as it's relatively soft and will bind a scraper edge causeing slips and scratches. bearhunter

Heat gun will soften epoxy, most two part 5 minute epoxies soften up by 60 degrees C, and just get easier to scrape off the hotter you get. Use a hard plastic or wood scrap to scrape it off with, and don't get hot epoxy on your fingers, it sticks:D
