Removal of front iron sight

Hi,
I just purchased an SW M&P15 and a Colt/Urmax ar-22. Both have the fixed front sights. I would like to remove the front sights from both rifles because I have optics for both guns and the front fixed sights can be seen in the scopes. Can I just take them off or do I need something in front of the forward rails?

Dunno about the Urmax but if the M&P15 is the standard ar15 then the best option is to replace the front sight with a low profile gas block.

Otherwise you can cut it off but it's a permanent modification and looks awful.
