What is the best way to remove iron sights. I am assuming that they are soldered on. If I heat the front sight to the point where the solder melts, I am concerned that it may alter the tempering of the barrel. Any suggestions?

Barrels are not heat treated. As a rule their hardness is basically that of un-heat treated 4140. You can safely heat it to dark cherry red. Any hotter and you can scale the inside of the bore unless you use some kinky tricks that I wont get into. Dark cherry red will melt all types of solder. Just remember to let the barrel cool down naturally. DON’T COOL OR QUENCH IT IN WATER OR OIL! It is supposed to be soft not hard. Sights can be put on a hundred different ways. What is the make and model of the gun? Rod

CIL did sell a rifle on the 98 Mauser, it was called the model 972C and was made by Parker Hale. I have to admit there were not to many of these offered but it is quite possible that you do have one. Start by removing the hood and driving out the site blade and looking to see if there is a screw under the blade. If not look to see if there is what looks like a tiny pin where the screw would be. If there is a pin odds are that the site is soft soldered on and you can remove the site by heating with a propane torch until the solder starts to run and then twisting the site off with pliers. If there is no pin odds are it is silver soldered on. You will have to heat it to cherry red with an oxyacetylene torch to get it off. Propane or butane is not hot enough. DON’T OVER HEAT IT! That’s bad! There is a trick you can try first. Take a pin and scratch the joint between the site and barrel to uncover the solder. Look at it with a magnifier. If the solder looks silver it is low temp soft solder. If it has a yellow tinge to it you can bet its high temp silver. Rod

It is a 972C, I just checked the paperwork. Thanks for the tips guys. I'll post a pic once I have reworked this rifle to its former splendor.
