Howdy all. Noticed all my M1 Garand spent brass has a nice dent in the rim. Any idea on how to remove? Sometimes brass wont fit in the shell holder to resize its that bad. Thanks

For anyone to give you any answers that have any accuracy.
Please post a picture.
My first inclination would be related to a loading creating high pressure, or a headspace issue.
But I can't be sure because I can't see what you are seeing.

Without pictures it's hard to say.
Any nicks I file off with an emory board for doing fingernails.
Bent rims, I'd think there is something wrong, but could be hammered flat using a punch through the indside.
If it is a dent that is displacing enough material to prevent going into the shellholder just file it flush.
I'd be pretty concerned as to what is causing the damage in the first place, though.

It's quite obvious that the last two posters have no idea what you are talking about.

That distortion of the rim shows up with many Garand rifles.

It is hard to get rid of easily, but a small 3-square file will remove enough from
the groove side to allow you to reload those cases, and use them again.

These rifles are notoriously hard on brass cases.

Regards, Eagleye.

If you do not remove the ding from the rim, on the down stroke of the press the case will be held off center and your case necks will end up crooked and have excess neck runout.

Thanks guys. Eagleye and biged51 hit the nail on the head. Biged51 thanks never even thought of that. So just line that up with the unsupported section of the shell holder and one should be good to go. At least one more time before ditching the brass.

Not sure this is going to work.
Try a brass or two through the press and try chambering it fresh out of the press after it's sized for length.

I'm no expert on Garands but I had a similar problem with my 8mm FN49. The ejection was so violent It just about tore pieces right out of the rim. The problem was easily solved by turning down the gas adjustment valve. Less gas = slower bolt movement which meant no more beat up rims.

If you don't have an ammo problem then an adjustable gas valve for your Garand might solve the problem. I believe Brownells sells a couple of different ones.
