I'm mounting a scope on my savage mark II and the rear sight is slightly too high for the scope to clear. I've read that it is a dovetail sight and I just need to tap it sideways to remove it.
Which part of the sight should I be hitting? It seems like it's on there really tight and I don't want to break it or bend it too much.

Tap it out from the left side of the gun towards the right side with a non-marring punch.

Tap the portion of the sight that's actually inside the dovetail on the barrel. I found a photo of a removed sight and added a label showing where to tap:

Use a non-marring punch, like these from Princess Auto --

You can also buy punches sold specifically for firearms work.

It's best if you put the gun in a vise of some sort. If you don't have a vice, put the gun on a padded surface, such as a couple of folded towels on a table or counter.

I also pad the end of my punch with a folded up cleaning patch.

Hope this helps.

I use a piece of high density cast nylon for a punch, and a 6 ounce ball peen hammer.
