The best way to remove it from the metal is with Vinegar. Furniture stripper will remove it from the stock. Removing the "red stuff" will also remove about $200 from its value.
If you're talking about the long term storage grease, COSMOLENE, then lots of paper towels/hot water/tooth brush. Varsol will also work but can cause other issues.

Isopropyl alcohol or methyl hydrate will remove shellac, I don't know what methyl will do to wood though so test in a out of place spot or on a different scrap of wood.

Iirc vinegar removes bluing, it's what everyone uses to strip the plum bluing from svt40 bolts and carriers.

Vinegar will rust the surface of bare metal if it isn't neutralized after use, it's acidic.
I use it to strip rust out of the inside of old rusty motorcycle tanks, I fill the tank and leave it soaking. Every week I drain and strain the vinegar and refill till the tank is rust free, once rust free you dump the vinegar and flush the tank with fresh water. After the flush you neutralize the acid base with warm water and baking soda which is alkali, if you aren't quick enough with the baking soda the flash rust is immediate. Once neutralized you rinse with methal hydrate to expell any moisture and coat the inside with two stroke oil or fill with gas and use.

Hahaha, yeah no doubt.
Is the shellac already flaking, if so I recall someone on here using gorilla tape to take shellac off. Like waxing per se lol, stick tape on and peel it off. The shellac sticks to the tape and is removed.
