I've heard Peter at RustyWood Trading is the go-to guy for all things lever action.
Sounds like you may just need a new carrier.
Have a look here to see if you can resolve your problem:

If so, a new carrier is $71.US at Brownells and it's easily replaced yourself if you're somewhat handy. On a scale from 1-10 (10 being xtreme difficult) it's probably a 4.

Where abouts are you in this Great White North?
Thank you. Mine is a .444s so I don't think that one will work but I will see if Brownells has one for the .444
Some of their carriers work for multiple calibers.
On MidwayUSA's site, their description for the same part number says:
Marlin Carrier Assembly Marlin 444, 444P, 338MX, 338MXLR, 1895 450 Marlin, 45-70 Government

Try the Brownells one first. There are some slight enhancements to the new carriers that should make for more consistent cycling. No sense wasting more money than you have you.
Don't toss out your old carrier! It can be made to work again but would require some work should you not be able to find parts for it later down the road.
While you have your rifle disassembled, round over the cam on the finger lever. This will help cut down on how quickly the notch on the carrier is formed.
I did up a thread on slicking up a Marlin 1894 but the principles still applies to your 1895.
