Hi, I just received an SKS and I see that a previous owner has put some varnish on the wood. But being lazy, he did not disasemble the rifle  and the cosmo had not been properly removed so I have some nice gunk stuck in there.

What is the best way to do this? What solvent do you recommend?

Thanks, Nic

Use Spray Nine from Canadian tire and boiling water should do it/ Break disk cleaner/ degrease sprays / whole bunch of other stuff

I'm assuming you'll be removing the metal pieces from the wood to protect the wood from the chemicals, if so then I would be using Brake Parts Cleaner to remove the varnish/shellac ... spray, let soak 15 to 30 seconds, rub with a rag, repeat if needed ... I haven't found anything the this stuff won't remove. Just be sure to oil the metal well afterwards as any protection on it will also be removed - this stuff is designed to "de-oil" brake components.

You can get it in "regular" or Non-Clorinated. Both seem to be equally effective cleaners in my experience. They are both fairly "stinky", so I wouldn't recommend doing this in your kitchen.

Brake clean eats paint, but slowly. I'd probably try the spray nine out first if I were you. Is the paint a matte finish or glossy? Lacquer thinner might be a good option too. Whatever you try start in an inconspicuos area and see how it affects the finish...

Acetone eats paint too ;) In fact pretty much anything that is going to remove the varnish will likely have an effect on the paint finish as well... Maybe you have to do some touch up painting or strip the whole thing and start fresh...
